VLC no sound again on SL9 after updates

Postby Richlion » Tue Aug 21, 2012 14:51

Hello,

I know this should be in another section as the problem relates to VLC not giving any sound.
This however is a recurring problem with the updates we receive, hence my post in this section.
This problem was on SL8, VLC at some point stopped producing any sound.
We can see numerous threads related to this problem and attempts to fix them.

I finally decided to reinstall and used SL9, and VLC had sound and everything was working for a couple of weeks.
The again - bang, another set of updates and VLC lost sound once again.
In fact now the sound is totally being screwed up - probably by VLC, but maybe some of the updates we recenlty had.
Once VLC is launched terminating doesn't help, Skype cannot produce any sound, although nothing is muted in the KMixer, nothing muted in Alsamixer. I have to restart my system to regain control over my sound.
As for watching video files SMPlyer is ok, but doesn't play all the media files I have, I had to install Kaffeine in order to watch any movies, this again cannot play many files probably due to missing codecs.

I pretty much have all the basics of SL9 installed, nothing out of the ordinary and I think someone should start looking at the package updates we receive and test them. The last 182+ updates that came last weekend did not fix anything.

Has there been a bug filed yet?

Best Regards,
Richard

Have you tried the Search facility in the SL Bugzilla to check?

If you can't find a bug report, file one with as much information as possible.
