No GUI after upgrading.

Postby akshitbaunthiyal » Tue Aug 07, 2012 13:37

So I just completed upgrading my installation of Sabayon Linux (KDE). And now I don't have any GUI. By default, I'm logged in to the command line interface. I tried using
Code: Select all
startx
but I get Fatel server error: no screens found.

I read on the forum about changing the default repository to sabayonlinux.org but even after trying that, I couldn't use this repository. [sabayonlinux.org]repository not available.

What am I supposed to do??

PS - I did not upgrade my kernel.

No worries, fixed it myself.

Code: Select all
nano /etc/entropy/repositories.conf.d/entropy_sabayonlinux.org.example
and saved it as repositories.conf in /etc/entropy/ directory. That enabled the sabayonlinux.org repository. Then I upgraded and things got fixed. :D

Did you try "equo update --force"?

I ran into the same problem today with X not starting. I ran an equo deptest and libtest. I then found this thread and copied over the default repo file. I had to do an equo update --force to get it to think there was new data. It is still using the weekly repository, but it did find a bunch of new packages that needed to be updated, including equo.

I'm just finished an upgrade, but that didn't fix the problem. Now I'm upgrading to linux-sabayon-3.5 and we'l see what happens.

I found out the root of my problem, hope it helps you but it is unlikely.

For some reason my wireless logitech headset causes X to crash. I removed the usb dongle and I was able to restart X. Insterting the dongle caused an immediate crash.

Apparently X thinks its an input device, which maybe it is since it has controls, but either way X no longer likes it.

Perhaps you have a similar device that is causing a crash?

Code: Select all
[  2650.464] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Logitech Logitech Wireless Headset" (type: KEYBOARD, id 11)
[  2650.464] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"
[  2650.464] (**) Option "xkb_model" "evdev"
[  2650.464] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "us"
[  2650.464] (II) evdev: Logitech Logitech Wireless Headset: initialized for absolute axes.
[  2650.465]
***crash***

@gnac - I did the force upgrade thing yeterday and was so fed up of not getting a GUI that I completely removed Sabayon from my computer and replaced it with Chakra Linux. Currently, Sabayon is stored in my computer as a virtual appliance. I'll see what happens after I upgrade. If it breaks again, I'll try and fix it (a virtual machine will be less cumbersome).

PS - I do not have any removable hardware plugged in. It's a laptop.

If you were getting no screens error after startx was something wrong in xorg.conf, did you try a restore from one of the default/backup xorg.conf files in /etc/X11?

No. I know it was stupid but I removed Sabayon and installed Chakra. But same problem there too. This problem seems to affect rolling/semi-rolling distros.

Not strictly related to Sabayon but this might be of some use.
I have an ATI GPU (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550v).
In Chakra Linux, when I use catalyst dirvers and perform an upgrade, xorg breaks. However, on using radeon drivers and upgrading, things go smooth.
So, I suppose this problem has something to do with the proprietary display drivers.
