Gnome Desktop in VirtualBox [Solved]

Postby wraeth » Tue Jul 31, 2012 5:13

Greetings.

I have been a long-time user of Gentoo, and recently discovered Sabayon. I have been trialling it both at home and work; and am so-far impressed.

I am having an issue, though. As part of migrating, I also decided to look at different desktop environments; and from what I've seen of GNOME at home, I would like to test it at work in terms of productivity and what not.

The issue I'm having is that, when I ran Sabayon 9 from the GNOME LiveDVD in a VirtualBox machine, gnome-shell had no issue running at all (aside from simply being a little laggy from running off a DVD).

However, I've installed Sabayon onto a virtual drive to trial it properly before physical installation; and while most apps give me no issue at all, gnome-shell simply refuses to run. I've made sure everything is up-to-date (latest VBox Guest Additions, Xf86 Video Virtualbox 4.1.16#3.4.0 on a 3.4.0-sabayon kernel, etc), and while the system boots and runs GNOME in fallback mode, gnome-shell just wont run.

I've tried swapping OpenGL implementations to ATI (Xorg wouldn't work) and nVidia (wouldn't select due to missing library (libOpenCL.so) that I can't find), and even tried swapping out the Graphics check script (/usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated-helper) to point to /bin/true (bad things happened).

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really like to be able to fully test the shell before I can commit to using this as a primary, physically installed OS, and I simply can't figure out why it's not working...

Thanks in advance.

Not that anyone seems to be particularly concerned with this, but the issue was primarily to do with the version of VirtualBox - apparently the latest one seems to have issues with the display driver and gnome-shell. Downgrading to VirtualBox 4.1.12 seemed to work; though I also have to run in single-screen mode, but I think that's more to do with the capabilities of the graphics card itself.

Thank the handy folks over at Gentoo for that gem.
