I booted into the usb 20120725 kde 64 and got to the vt. I did su sabayonuser and the user change happened with no errors. I then did another change back to root with no problem. That's working here but I can't get xserver to start using the live usb or the up to date installed instance. It seems I'm dealing with a bug in the mach64 driver or xserver. At least now I can install an update to repair the problem when it becomes available.

I found something that seems a bit odd in the xorg.conf file of my installed instance of sabayon. I don't know why it's there or if it is related to the problem but it has me asking why it's there.

Code: Select all
Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "ati"
    #BusID    "PCI:04:02"
    #Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    #Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    #Option "BusType" "PCI"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    # UseEvents is causing segmentation faults with
    # NVIDIA 6xxx, 7xxx and >=275.xx.xx drivers
    #Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"

EndSection

Maybe it's nothing but it seems a bit odd that there's a reference to the nvidia logo for an ati driver.

Switching to tty i can switch users

I can start X running :
Code: Select all
# /etc/init.d/xdm restart

I can t boot the X server automatically even changing graphics settings at the boot kernel line (xdriver=ati and/or radeon.modeset=1 options)

I can get a blinking cursor using xdriver=radeon and modeset=1 but without it I get no cursor or a frozen cursor. Using alt+ctrl+f1 to get to a terminal I ran /etc/init.d/xdm restart and got the blinking cursor again.
