LXDE or XFCE? [Solved]

Postby harmon » Sun Jul 22, 2012 16:21

Hi!
On my new notebook with SSD I will install Sabayon 64 bit [xfs] - but which Desktop?
A couple of years I had Gnome 2 and I liked it very much (I don't like Gnome 3 - and after having tested it on other distributions I do not install Gnome 3). KDE, too, is not my choice.
What would be better for me: LXDE or XFCE? Important for my is the option "add to panel".

I'd go with Xfce, but trying out live sessions of each would be a good way of helping you to decide for yourself.

Personally, I much prefer lxde. I have tried xfce a few times and something about it annoys me to no end.

Code: Select all
hidd connect ...

Hi!
My decision depends on several points, one important is BT.

I haven't tried LXDE all too much, but I've had many problems with the settings manager in Xfce, but I really like the custom dpi setting in Xfce, decreasing the dpi to force a smaller and neater desktop makes it perfect for small low res screens.. In general I feel that Gnome/LXDE/Xfce has way to large fonts and everything.. maybe there is a similar setting in LXDE too, but if not, I'd recommend Xfce..

And while I know you are thinking of LXDE or Xfce, I've had pleasant experiences with Gnome and KDE as well, although somewhat slow, I feel Gnome has the nicest launcher that reacts to the win buttom (I didn't manage to bind it to win in KDE because it insisted that it is a modifier key..) and even if the launcher is slow, if you write out what you want to launch and press enter, it will launch it regardless if the launchers animation hasn't fully loaded, in KDE you need to wait.
On the other hand KDE in general acts as I want it to for multitasking.
While these two felt just a bit slow, this is on a 32bit 1.6GHz dual core Intel Atom with Ion, 4gb ddr2 and 128Gb crucial m4.. so with a decent laptop it will probably be no problem.

There is no default launcher in Xfce/LXDE/E17 that works as I want.

I'm using synapse as a launcher. It's lightweight don't need much dependencies and is fast.
For those who like zeitgeist, it can use that too.

I have tried LXDE many times. I have also left it installed as alternative DE ...
Considering footprint mem and functionality.. I have been using Xfce as a 1st choice for about 2 yrs.
2nd choice for me is OpenBox...
..Although, After using KDE for 10 years though unil 2009, I am once again impressed by 4.9 better speed and resource management.
Criticism accepted for Solutions that work. ;^)
