Follow the procedure in the last link in my previous post, to use the Open Source ATI driver instead of the Closed Source driver. You can press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a VT, log-in as the root user, and enter all the commands specified in the aforementioned thread and the posts to which it links.

Uff. I tried this commands

Code: Select all
1. Remove ati-drivers, ati-userspace
2. Install xf86-video-ati
3. Remove /etc/gpu-detector.conf
3.5. (Optional) run: eselect opengl set xorg-x11
4. Reboot

and i generated new xorg.conf

it seems, if i use command startx, that xorg works. After that i see only two screens with command line, but kdm dont start. What could be wrong<

Check if KDM, rather than XDM, is specified in /etc/conf.d/xdm:

Code: Select all
$ grep DISPLAYMANAGER /etc/conf.d/xdm
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

If it isn't, edit the file and replace "xdm" with "kdm".

By the way, better to use the command "eselect opengl set xorg-x11" anyway.

Also, you should not need to regenerate xorg.conf. In fact, it's not recommended. X Windows should be able to run without it. See The X Server Configuration HOWTO - 3. Configuring Xorg.

I still cannot find 12.6 in Rigo, equo, or emerge. Please tell me how you found it.

Thanks,
Tim

Thehe is my /etc/conf.d/xdm

Code: Select all
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | lxdm | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

I used eselect opengl set xorg-x11 again, but problem remains.

Check out the contents of:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
When kdm startup fails.

Also try to add the radeon module to the modules loaded by /etc/init.d/modules.
To do this, open as root, with your favourite text editor, the /etc/conf.d/modules file, then add at the end of the file:
Code: Select all
modules="radeon"

and reboot.
If you already had some modules there, just add radeon to them.

Joost wrote a nice guide how to switch to radeon: Getting rid of Catalyst

Off topic:

It's called ati-drivers:
Code: Select all
[U] x11-drivers/ati-drivers (12.4(1)[1]@06/20/2012 -> (~)12.6(1)[1]): AMD kernel drivers for radeon r600 (HD Series) and newer chipsets
[U] x11-drivers/ati-userspace [1] (12.4(1)@06/20/2012 -> (~)12.6(1)^d): AMD X11 drivers for radeon r600 (HD Series) and newer chipsets
[1] "sabayon-distro" /var/lib/layman/sabayon-distro
