Thanks. I have a long day at work today so will try that tomorrow (day off). For today I'll accept what I have :)

Edit: Just checked, this is already set. The xf86-video-ati drivers package has just been updated anyway so I'll try again (as I said) tomorrow and let you know.

Hey all, this is affecting me too. My latop has a Radeon HD 4570 graphics chipset and since updating I am no longer able to get into KDM.

However, if I log in as myself and run startx I get a working X screen with 3 terminals and am able to launch X apps like Chromium. Also, if I log in as root I can run both startx and XDM with success.

I have checked and my system does have /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf containing the modeset=1 line.

However, I have also tried uninstalling ati-drivers completely and KDM still refuses to load on startup (The Xorg log indicates No Devices Found), although manually running startx works.

So, am I doomed to a life of xf86-ati-drivers and startx pain or is there hope?

1. Remove ati-drivers
2. Install xf86-video-ati
3. Remove /etc/gpu-detector.conf
3.5. (Optional) run: eselect opengl set xorg-x11
4. Reboot

Thanks for that lxnay but it doesn't quite fix things for me...

When I restart KDM still doesn't start. However, if I get into a console and then do:

/etc/init.d/xdm stop
/etc/init.d/xdm start

KDM starts and everything works fine...

I noticed that despite equo remove ati-drivers I still have aticonfig and fglrx.ko on my system...

Update on mine:

It wasn't as simple as stated in the notice board. I eventually reinstalled xf86-video-ati, linux-firmware, deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reinstalled the kernel (after every search I made stating to check the firmware is compiled in or to make sure it's in the initramfs) which I presume regenerated the correct modules for initramfs, then rebooted.

Now, KDE with hardware acceleration is now working fully. Compiz up and running (albeit slower) and all is well with this, however...

LXDE still won't load. I'm getting this odd error in the log before it closes down:

Code: Select all
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0,
[dri] but the kernel reports a version of 2.16.0.
[dri] Make sure your module is loaded prior to starting X, and
[dri] that this driver was built with support for KMS.
[dri] Aborting.

So why is this happening with LXDE when it works fine with KDE? This is a new one on me because I was of the opinion that it loads the same x-server config.

The radeon kernel module is not loaded before X or KMS is not enabled.
Check both.

Well, I've done a re-install of xf86-video-ati, linux-firmware, kernel-sabayon-3.3 and deleted xorg.confg as well as adding radeon to /etc/conf.d/modules and things are still not peachy :-/

UPDATE: Hmmmm, and now it works. Oh well :-)

My current behaviour is actually quite odd.

The first time xdm starts it borks. It doesn't matter whether this happens during boot or default runlevels or even if I remove it from all runlevels and start it manually. For my system the first start of xdm results in garbage display and no functionality. I then have to stop and start it from the command-line in order for it to work.

I'm thinking of just making an alternate stop-start script that Does a start-stop-start on start :-)
