Removing ati-userspace removed the option from eselect opengl list. But after a reboot I still did not get any further - as soon as the login screen attempted to appear the the system froze. (I could still move the mouse but it was a jerky motion on the screen) Only keyboard commands I could get to work was REISUB. I finally was able to start X again by installing the ATI drivers in recovery mode. Anything else I could check for ?
Some mesa commands did not have a classic version
