I'm still testing and using MATE in two of my Sabayon installations.
I recommend: Try MATE!
Is beautiful, Compiz compatible,
have their own applications, but also executes KDE or GNOME3 packages,
It is not only a copy of GNOME2. In my tests, and at least in my Sabayon instalations, 32 or 64 Bits, MATE is so good, and runs easier, more stable and faster than KDE or GNOME3, and also, faster than XFCE and my antique GNOME2 installations.
is easier to configure and personalize also.
It is recent, have only near 1 year, but MATE promisse. is a good graphical env. Give it a chance, try MATE.
