Gimp 2.8 ?

Postby erasmus » Fri Jun 29, 2012 11:07

Hello

I just installed Sabayon 9 KDE and am now installing my usual working horses. I have worked through your Entropy-Manual (my congratulations, very comprehensive and well-written) and was able to install already a few of them: Kaffeine, Krusader, Firefox and Thunderbird. However with Gimp I am a bit at a loss. On 3rd May 2012 the new heavily expected Gimp 2.8 was released and went already into the repos of a few Linux distributions. Why do you still port the developer version 2.7.x which is anyway not equipped with some important error remedies (they went directly into the 2.8.RC's) and which is certainly not maintanied any longer.

May I ask the team to correct this as soon as possible, so that The Gimp ist also in this great distribution up to date?

By the way, a first bug-remedy is in the pipeline: 2.8.1, maybe in about three to four weeks it will be ready.

I can also submit here the proof that the Gimp in Sabayons repos are not a stable version for working, but an unstable for developers.

Yes, I did see this thread. And it dates from February, which makes my question even more demanding, as Sabayon claims to be

Being bleeding edge means being always up to date, even with betas, sometimes even with alpha releases, without being unstable.
Sabayon's policy is being always up to date if this doesn't involve losing stability or features.

May I allow myself to doubt that statement a little bit? Considering the real stable version has been published longer than 8 (eight) weeks ago. Where is here bleeding edge?

I do not want to dramatise it, having the 4.8 with Fedora and Mint, but otherwise Sabayon is to me the preferred distro as soon as the issues with Gimp and Kaffeine (see here) are solved, Then Sabayon would become my workhorse .

2.8.0-r1 is in Portage. If you know your way in the Gentoo package manager, you can emerge it.....
It's also available in Entropy's Testing branch "Limbo"
You can enable "Limbo" and install the package with Entropy:
https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... ository.3F
If you enable this repository keep in mind that things can break...

Thank you Batvink for this encouraging answer. This is good news.

Now just to make sure:
Step 1: I replace in repository.conf the line
Code: Select all
official-repository-id = sabayon-weekly
with the line
Code: Select all
official-repository-id = sabayon-limbo

Step 2: I then make an «equo update»
Step 3: I then change to Rigo, search for Gimp, and install all packages I need?
Step 4: I then reverse Step 1 back to weekly and an «equo update».

When a new version of Gimp appears, I do the Steps 1 to 4 again.

Is that correct so?

Despite that, may I ask one more question?

On the page you linked me it says:
sabayonlinux.org
This is the repository mostly refered to as "main". Every monday most, if not all, packages from sabayon-limbo (testing) get moved into this one.

sabayon-weekly
This is by default the only enabled repository. It is a copy of sabayonlinux.org (main) repository. Every saturday night it gets renewed. This repository was introduced to build in a delay between when packages get moved from testing and are available for all users. This gives packagers additional time to test packages in the main repository and fix issues if any before the copy is made.

Is it possible, that this mechanism is nor working as planned? Because as I wrote earlier, Gimp 2.8 is now nearly two month old. Are there any real reasons why it takes such a long time?

And is there somewhere a list of all programmes in Limbo?

Thanks again,
Erasmus

Check out http://packages.sabayon.org/

Searching for a package name will list the available matches for sabayon-weekly, sabayon.org.

Edit: I thought it used to have sabayon-limbo there as well, but it doesn't seem to at the moment.

2.8 is in limbo, allright. but if you enable it, install the package and reverse back to daily or weekly.,
the first upgrade you make will actually "downgrade" Gimp to 2.7.5 again.
so you must really know what you're doing.....
Further, you must realise that the Developpers Sabayon has, are all Volunteers, and probably having a full job at day-time too.
Please be patient. 2.8 is allready in Limbo, so within a week it'll be pushed to daily, and finally to weekly repos.
IS it really THAT crusual that you have the 2.8 version right now?

Thanks.

I give it a try. Is there a possibility to just download the Gimp with its environment and then install it into /opt? I did that with one or two packages out of the usual repos in Mint and was then independent of the standard routine. What would be the commands on the console? First downloading to /media/anwender/downloads/linux/gimp and then the all imortant command for installing (Debian command dpkg).

And yes, the new and some updated applications in Gimp are really a big step forward. I work practically with Gimp every day. If I knew it will really take only one week to get into the standard repo I would wait. But I am a large bit sceptic, considering that thread you mentioned dates back months.

And thaks too to Stupot, I will now go and study the list. It is already bookmarked.
