Hi,
kernel 3.4 freezes when starting cheese or any webcam application, please add following file into your /etc/modprobe.d directory.
- Code: Select all
# cat /etc/modprobe.d/uvcvideo.conf
options uvcvideo nodrop=1
#
I found the solution here
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141213. It seems this issue happening only on SAMSUNG laptops with built-in webcam (SCB0385N, device id=2232:1005), kernel 3.2 works without any problem.
- Code: Select all
[ 19.818980] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device WebCam SCB-0385N (2232:1005)
[ 19.820171] input: WebCam SCB-0385N as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.4/1-1.4:1.0/input/input7
[ 19.820250] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

Hi!
I wanted to add that this solved my problem too.
After a fresh install of sabayon 9 my webcam started to behave abnormally. It freezed every time I started to use it with any program (despite the correct modules were loaded and everything seemed fine)...conseguently my system had to be restarted manually (pressing the main button). the hardware is a laptop Dell xps15 and the webcam is the built-in one.
The strange thing is that everything was normal before this fresh install (apart from some green flickering, but not a great issue), but it seems not to be a kernel problem: in fact, my problem persists with every kernel I tried (from 3.2 to current 3.4).
Adding that configuration file solved the whole issue.
Thanks
Renzo
