Sound in Sabayon 9 [Solved]

Postby bnitch » Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:13

I loaded #9 on a hard drive all by itself and after 2 days of playing around and adding programs I realized that there was no sound when I went to a youtube video. So tried radio programs and Media Center, tried everything I could google to a point that I have lost track of what I've done, so I deleted it off the drive. Then I thought of putting in the live disk and still no sound. I have tried the sound on the motherboard and the PCI sound card I have, works with another Distro I have on different drive and worked with Sabayon 8. :?: :?: :?:

Post the output of the following commands run as root user in a Konsole/Terminal window:

Code: Select all
uname -a
lspci -v
lsusb
lsmod
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep -i codec
tail -n 500 /var/log/messages | grep -i --text error

Also, have you checked using AlsaMixer that none of the channels are muted or turned right down? Launch AlsaMixer in a Konsole/Terminal window under your own user account:

Code: Select all
alsamixer -c 0

(assuming your card is device zero) and check all the settings.

sorry about the long post but I dont know how to put it in a scroll box. I reloaded Sabayon 9 on new drive and still no sound. looks like it doesn't see my card in the kernel. Shows up in KMix but not even a sound icon on top bar. I like Sabayon but it maybe over my head as far as knowledge goes.

So you have three audio devices:

Code: Select all
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M4A785TD Motherboard
    Flags: slow devsel, IRQ 16
    Memory at fe8f4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
    Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Juniper HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5700 Series]
    Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology Device aa58
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 45
    Memory at fe9bc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
    Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
    Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0001 Rev=1 Len=010 <?>
    Capabilities: [150] Advanced Error Reporting
    Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
    Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

04:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Aureal Semiconductor Vortex 2 (rev fa)
    Subsystem: Aureal Semiconductor Device 0001
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 20
    Memory at febc0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
    I/O ports at ec00 [size=8]
    I/O ports at e880 [size=8]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1
    Kernel driver in use: snd_au8830
    Kernel modules: snd-au8830

You can deselect the HDMA audio controller via the PulseAudio Volume Control GUI (media-sound/pavucontrol). On the Configuration tab of the PulseAudio Volume Control application, I had to change the Profile of 'Redwood HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5600] Series' (my GPU's HDMI audio controller) to Off for audio to come out of the speakers (I left the Profile of 'Internal Audio' as 'Analog Stereo Duplex' as usual).

However, you have two Intel HDA audio controllers. So you probably have two audio cards as far as the low-level ALSA software is concerned. See the SL Wiki article HOWTO: Resolve Problems With HDA-INTEL Sound Cards for some things to try.

I have one card, and one onboard ( that doesn't seem to work ) and the other that is listed is my video card that has no sound out. I'll dig deeper. Never had a sound problem before this upgrade? Kde? something changed.
I haven't installed the Catalyst drivers yet.

Not KDE. (Why does everyone blame KDE?!) Notice from the output of lsmod that you've got several audio modules loaded. You'll probably find that one of them is clashing with one of the others. You could try unloading them one by one to see what happens. Use the rmmod command as root user in a Konsole/Terminal window. for example:

Code: Select all
rmmod snd_au8830
rmmod snd_usb_audio
rmmod snd_hda_codec_hdmi

and so on.

If you've still got the LiveDVD for a version of SL in which your audio worked, you could boot that and use the lsmod command to compare which modules were running to what you have on your latest installation.

I found the #8 live disk and put it in, sound works - put in #9 and no sound. I won't mark this as solved but reinstalling Sabayon 8 is OK by me. Not that big a difference, maybe I'll get a newer sound card and try again, I don't need to be bleeding edge.
