My opinion about Rigo (and a question)

Postby cronotk » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:28

Hello!

Before getting to the stuff that's related to the topic let me tell you a few things about me and Sabayon.
The first time I installed it was version 6 (IIRC). Back then I used Sulfur for all package-related work. It was pretty slow and even made mistakes (all gnome-icons were deleted, networkmanager stopped working). Reinstallation of those packages fixed the problems though (even if it required me to tamper with ifconfig, route and /etc/interfaces when networkmanager died).

Now I had my annual "let's try out another distribution" phase and installed Sabayon 9 to find out that Sulfur has been replaced with Rigo. So far I didn't have to update anything so I will see if it has the same problems as Sulfur. However, the installation process was a lot faster and worked in the background while I selected more packages to install.
That is really great stuff in my opinion! So far, I am very happy with it!

However, there's one thing that Sulfur did better. Not great, but better: Categories.
In Rigo I can only type in parts of packages that I am looking for, but I don't have a way to, say, open up the "Games" section and browse through all the available packages there. Maybe a "Software Center" thingy that only shows the main packages and no supporting packages would be great too, but categories would be a good start.

Are there plans to implement either of those things?

Regards

Just a quick question...

Did you try searching Rigo for "game" ?

If not, do so and reply back on what you think of the results. I'm not home at the moment, so I'm not sure what the results will be, but I think answering this question along with others like it will fill that gap that people are missing. Instead of navigating to the 'games' category, if typing in 'game' in the search bar gets you to the same information, I think it's an improvement.

If searching for 'game' doesn't give you anything close to what you wanted, then Rigo needs that feedback to make it more useful.

Rigo is recent, not have all options, therefore.

example, for control the upgrades, for "mark" mote than one package, for upgrade something, some packages, without upgrade other packages, sulfur is more "practical".

example, i want to upgrade all, but not upgrade only nvidia, sulfur is easier for this.

Until this moment, Sulfur and Rigo are both usable, and i hev im mind that this is the reason tnah sulfur is mantained in the repos.

A Rigo section was added to bugzilla recently.
