Google Earth has tiny fonts on 64bit [Solved]

Postby weirdtalk » Tue Jun 12, 2012 4:32

My Google Earth has tiny fonts on 64bit machine. My 32 bit machine is fine. Any ideas as to how to fix? Thanks.

KDE? GNOME? Xfce? LXDE? ...

Code: Select all
$ qtconfig

Click on the Fonts tab and select the default font. I have:

Family:
DejaVu Sans
Style: Bold
Point Size: 8

Try adjusting your settings.

And here's my ~/.config/Google/GoogleEarthPlus.conf file, to compare with yours:

Code: Select all

Well it's strange that is for sure.

Running KDE by the way.

So qtconfig has no effect (saves don't persist) UNLESS i run it as root than it persists for the root user. Google earth does have the fonts change for the root user, the size increases but it uses a font that is not specified from qtconfig and it doesn't change with the choices of qtconfig. Furthermore the root font style is different from the user font style.

And the config file had no important differences that I could spot.

Have you checked System Settings > Application Appearance > Fonts on both your machines, to see if they are the same?

If that does not help, have you checked if there is a difference between the fonts installed on your two machines?

Here are the fonts installed on my main machine:

media-fonts/acroread-asianfonts
media-fonts/arphicfonts
media-fonts/baekmuk-fonts
media-fonts/corefonts
media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi
media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi
media-fonts/font-adobe-utopia-100dpi
media-fonts/font-adobe-utopia-75dpi
media-fonts/font-adobe-utopia-type1
media-fonts/font-alias
media-fonts/font-arabic-misc
media-fonts/font-bh-100dpi
media-fonts/font-bh-75dpi
media-fonts/font-bh-lucidatypewriter-100dpi
media-fonts/font-bh-lucidatypewriter-75dpi
media-fonts/font-bh-ttf
media-fonts/font-bh-type1
media-fonts/font-bitstream-100dpi
media-fonts/font-bitstream-75dpi

System Settings > Application Appearance > Fonts does change the font size, but not the style. I'm running off to work, but I'll check later about installed fonts and post an update.

Here is the list of fonts from the 32bit machine:

media-fonts/corefonts-1-r6
media-fonts/dejavu-2.33
media-fonts/encodings-1.0.4
media-fonts/font-alias-1.0.3
media-fonts/font-misc-misc-1.1.2
media-fonts/liberation-fonts-1.07.2
media-fonts/libertine-ttf-5.1.3.20110615
media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera-1.10-r3
media-fonts/unifont-5.1.20080914
media-fonts/urw-fonts-2.4.9

I installed those along with your list. Still not using a good font.

Well, it's difficult for me to be of much more help, because I don't have your problem and I'm using 64-bit Linux too. Can you post a screenshot of what the Google Earth text looks like?

The only other things I can suggest are what Google tells me. For example, the following post regarding Google Earth 6 in Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 (it seems a lot of Ubuntu users have a problem with Google Earth fonts):

https://productforums.google.com/forum/ ... 1KKNZEZ48J

In my case, the directory is /opt/googleearth/, not /opt/google/earth/free/

If I were you, I would move, not delete the libraries that user dmig says to delete. Then you can revert if his 'fix' does not work.

The only other thing I can think of would be the following old post in the SL Forums, which I have not had to do for several years but may work for you: Google Earth fonts not displayed [Solved]

The fonts were from the menu and other panes not the main map pane.

Was able to fix by following the steps outlined here:
http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=15638

and uninstalling and reinstalling google earth (which probably wasn't needed) and restarting X.

Thanks.
