KDE restart with boot entry option

Postby msdobrescu » Mon Jun 04, 2012 12:32

Hello,

When I've started using Sabayon, I have come from Mandriva. There, KDE has a drop down as option for restart, to reboot from any other entries installed in the boot loader.
I could start Windows or another Linux directly, without having to stay and watch for the bootloader to give me the option to choose.

Is this possible to Sabayon too?

Thank you.

You could probably change the default option in /boot/grub.conf if you're using grub. I'm not sure if there's an easy tool to do that for Sabayon, but that's probably how it's done in your Mandriva.

Looks like there's something called GrubReboot: http://wiki.debian.org/GrubReboot

Might be worth some reading.

You may cautionslly edit the file/boot/grub/grub.cfg of the default grub ( i dont undestood if you default grub is of sabayon or of mandriva),changing the time to boot and the entry.

is a good practice to copy the original file prior, for not loose it, since incorrect edition of the grub file may results in boot failure.

Code: Select all
cd /
cd boot/grub
sudo cp grub.cfg  grub.cfg.copy
sudo kwrite (or gedit, nano etc... your favorite txt editor) grub.cfg

I have 2 systems. One is Mageia (fork of Mandriva, but similar behavior), one is Sabayon.
I've noticed that Mageia manages these, so it adds the grub entries at the KDE's restart dialog button (the dialog with 30 secs countdown after you press shutdown or restart in the KDE menu). The button has an drop-down arrow, used to choose the next boot entry after restart. I don't think editing grub is necessary... but I'm limited in knowledge on that.
The idea is to parse the grub and have the entries in KDE, I guess.

Should be, as that functionality has been a standard feature of KDE since KDE 4.7: kde 4.7 kdm+grub2 integration & GRUB2/BURG Integration in KDE. If you can't get it to work then there is another way of achieving similar functionality: Reboot button which allows you to specify which GRUB 2 menu entry to boot.
