comparison with other distros

Postby jackalpret » Tue Jun 05, 2012 20:23

Hi all !

I'm from Argentina, I'm using in my home laptop(core i3, 4gb ram) ubuntu 12.04 with unity (I hate it), and in my computer laptop(core i5, 4gb ram) Fedora 16 with gnome shell.

I'm php developer, I use netbeans (java), chromium (with 10 or more tabs and extensions), skype, pidgin, console, etc.

So , with Ubuntu I have continuous freezing (sometimes, excesive ram usage), for example copying files, working on netbeans, etc, with ubuntu 11.10 was the same ... in my work laptop with ubuntu 11.10 I had the same problem, but when I installed Fedora all the problems go out ... and I'm very happy with Fedora.

The problem with Fedora is updates ... on rolling release updates, so, I need to download and install new version.

Can you tellme your experience with another distros in comparison with sabayon ?

can sabayon will be my salvation ? :)

Fedora have MANY UPDATES, and use very new packages, but it is NOT Rolling Release.
Sabayon is Rolling Release, and upgrade every day.
However, the 3 Distros cannot be easily compared. Is similar to compare Rice, Cheese and Meat, alll are Food, but...
Ubuntu is Debian type, Fedora is RPM and Sabayon is a Binary-Compilation Gentoo Like.

between the 3, the best? You like more Rice or Potato?

I tested and/or used more than 40 distros. Nowdays, Sabayon is the favorite, but sometimes I use Mandriva, Mageia, OpenSUSE and Gentoo, but i use Sabayon much more.

Hi,

Sabayon is quite stable but it may depends on what you are doing.
Updates itself sometimes gives problems but they are when happens promply corrected and information is given on this site.
Fedora is a nightmare to upgrade and update are also sometime not perfect.
Same for ubuntu but it can get even worst.
I did try several distro and kept sabayon for main usage, sometimes arch just to compare and ubuntu to keep an eye on this famous distro.
Sabayon is for me the best as it has some more personality than arch and is more "robust" because linked to gentoo (especially for packages management).
About packages Sabayon has a lot of them, you can find package list here (sample for netbeans) :
https://packages.sabayon.org/quicksearc ... ns&x=0&y=0

Last thing rolling release is a real pleasure as you never have to reinstall.

Linux is like food have been said ! Why do I like more raw fish than red meat ??? pear than apple ??
So honestly as I mentioned arch and sabayon for exemple are very similar in many ways like rolling release, recent updates, technical documentation (for sabayon you can use almost of gentoo one) ...
I can do same with both, But I like sabayon better ;-)
So too make it short :
1 - Define what application you need and check availability in you distro choices and choose A or more
2 - Install some of them if you have time or define one you will stick with for a while
3 - Use it on everyday purpose and learn a bit how it works

As long as you stay on linux with a separate home dir you can switch any time or even use differents distro in parallel.

Sabayon is very user friendly but because of that you may have thing you do not need installed.
It is however very customable if you want to.

If you find the package you need it will be much better than fedora for sure
The page I have post is the package history.
It shows netbean IDE package release history.
Blue is sabayon packages and red gentoo.
You can use gentoo package on sabayon (be carefull if you mix).

Finally, I suggest you install sabayon and try to use it for a while.

I have to say the two main differences between arch and sabayon are.
# 1 Sabayon has a better and more mature installer.
: anaconda is so much better as a dual boot distro. The only thing that comes close is 'mint's' installer for dual boot.

:arch on the other hand(if you know what you are doing) can install stuff from AUR that exists 2 weeks from now.

mmmm is not like a food ... because i like all food hahaha

aswell ... I like all distros of linux, but eachone have their pros and cons....

I like more sabayon than arch for the installer... is easy, and have gnome installed.

so I want linux stable system , with stable I related with freezes , because in ubuntu I have too much freezes that freeze ALL THE SYSTEM, for example when I was copying 2gb files to another hard disk , the system freeze and I can't do CTRL+ALT+F2 for example ... and I hate reinstall ALL the system with the new versions

if i undestood, you need a Linux that not freezes and in wich you can not re-install newer versions.

Sabayon is best in this case, since it Rolling, Fedora is not Rolling, but is much more upograded that Ubuntu!

with fedora, you may remain upgraded for more that year ot two, Ubuntu siux months.

sabayon, in you want, no more re-install. Example my main Sabayon installation is 8-9, fully upgraded, but originally was a 5.2. more that 2 years or 3, neve re-installed, my gentoo also.

stability: never a rolling release Distro can be more stable than for example, debian or slackware with old packages. Rolling Release philosophy priorizes novelty, not stability...
