Unable to boot with the Sabayon 8 KDE Live DVD

Postby argymeg » Wed May 23, 2012 21:18

Hello everyone!
I would like to try Sabayon on my Toshiba laptop where I'm currently running Debian. Unfortunately, after burning the DVD and booting with it, the only thing it displays after a while is this:
Code: Select all
ISOLINUX 4.02 Sabayon     ETCD Copyright (...etc)
EDD: Error 8000 reading sector 1247013
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot:

The ISO has been downloaded correctly (confirmed by its md5 hash) and the DVD was verified by K3b. I have done quite a lot of research online, it appears that people have had the same issue with various distros, but noone appears to have found a solution. Any ideas here?

Even though you used the K3b option to check the burn, it's still worth double-checking the burned media in the optical drive using a different method. Insert the LiveDVD into the optical drive, let the disc spin up and then enter the following three commands:

Code: Select all
md5sum /dev/cdrom | awk '{print $1}' > md5a.txt
md5sum /home/argymeg/Sabayon_Linux_8_amd64_K.iso | awk '{print $1}' > md5b.txt
diff -qs md5a.txt md5b.txt

(Obviously change the path, if different.)

If you get an error message while the md5sum is reading the disc, there must be something wrong either with the burn or with the optical drive itself.

If you get the message "Files md5a.txt and md5b.txt differ" then the burn was bad.

If you get the message "Files md5a.txt and md5b.txt are identical" then the burn was good.

In either case, you could try using UNetbootin to create a 'LivePenDrive', configure your BIOS to boot from a USB pen drive (or press a key during boot to display a boot device menu, if your BIOS supports that), and try to install from that.

Nope, the DVD checks out fine, but it still doesn't work. I also tried with the daily build DVD, but still no luck. Probably part of my laptop's proclaimed Linux intolerance. :P I'm going to try out your USB suggestion, thanks a lot!
