sound stops working [Solved]

Postby joseph19634 » Fri May 18, 2012 3:00

for some reason my sound will just up and quit randomly. it wont start working again on reboot, nor has it worked when i tried reinstalling the sound application "mixer" (it controls my volume.) and still no luck.
Ill just briefly explain how my sound died, i was watching youtube (ray william johnson) and poof it went silent, i went to check the volume, and it was all turned down. i turned "master" "speakers" back up on the HDA mixer settings. and in the drop down box that says "playback settings" i had to turn that volume bar back up too. but turning up the volume bars didnt work, still no sound.

ive tried puting in the terminal code on the welcome screen of the "entropy store"
equo install gtk+:2 gtk+:3 gdk-pixbuf x11-libs/pango

and ive tried reinstalling the mixer application, so far the only fix ive found (temporary) is completely reinstalling my sabian. its a hassle!
please any help is VERY MUCH appreciated! THANK YOU.

Hi,
can you see any useful output, for example in /var/log/messages, when this issue happens?
Are you using KDE4, GNOME, any other desktop environment?
Have you tried using a pulseaudio specific application to handle volume, for example pavucontrol? Per-application volume settings of pulseaudio can cause some quirk sometimes.

Don't know if this will help. After the updates on May 6, VLC keeps crashing Kmix. Vlc itself or the firefox plugin both do the same thing. I switched to Dragon player, The Kde player and everything is good. I use the buildin sound on my Intel motherboard.
Hopefully some Guru can figure out why as Vlc is generraly a good program.

well i don't know if i can consider it solved (at least for now) but i got it working again, i booted up, and at the login screen instead of booting to the "default" desktop environment i dropped down the box and selected "fluxbox" -booted and then right clicked, hovered over window manager, and selected xfce4. it booted what seemed to be my regular desktop, wallpaper and all. (a few visual effects were different, almost as if it was set to a slightly different theme or something) but boom! the sound worked fine if i reroute to that. i then tried to reboot and booted back to my "default" desktop environment setting, and the sound still worked again. i don't know what the heck was wrong or glitching before but some how its like it corrected itself. i'm truly puzzled, but for right now it works fine again... thanks for the suggestions tho guys!
