Cinnamon: minimal installation

Postby LCN_UsesSabayon » Wed May 09, 2012 14:17

Hello everybody!

I'm new in Sabayon (I have found this distro few months ago but after having tried to install it on my HP-DV7 many times with no success I gave up)

I've just discovered that CINNAMON is available (I love it and tried it with LMDE)

So here is my wish: How to create a minimalist Cinnamon variant?

I tried this scenario without any success:
1.Fresh installation from CoreCDX 8 (when I will know sabayon better, I will try to start from SpinBase...)
2a. equo install xf86-video-intel xf86-video-ati (my laptop has a switchable hybrid AMD/Intel graphic card
2b. equo install gdm
2c. equo install cinnamon
3. modify /etc/conf.d/xdm in order to launch gmd (replace "lxdm" by "gdm")
4. logout

If I choose "GNOME" in GDM login screen then GNOME-3 starts correctly in standard mode (not the fallbacck one) => good
If I choose "cinnamon" then I get an error message (something gone wrong...), session is closed and I'm back in gdm

Installing meta package gnome-core-apps fixes the issue but I think this package too huge for my initial wish...
I guess it contains one or several packages needed by cinnamon

So my question is : which package(s) have I to install before step 3?

cinammon is not a minimal desktop...
Is a modification of GNOME-Shell and have many GNOME3 dependencies, including gnome-core.
if installed minimally, i have in mind that may not working properly.

thanks for your answer.
in my understanding, there is often (always...) a minimal version of anything.
I never told that cinnamon minimal was as minimal as gnome-shell minimal or so.
I'm just searching only required packages to be installed in order to run cinnamon out of the box (the second rule of sabayon philosophy)
so if cinnamon depends on gnome-core (libs or apps?) and absolutly needs it in order to run prepoerly, why such a dependency is missing in cinnamon package?

At the moment, I found these following packages needed for a "core" version of cinnamon (based on a fresh installation from CoreCDX 8 iso):
1.cinnamon (of course!)
2.nautilus (I don't know which dependencies of nautilus are really needed but I'm still searching for them...)

At this time, you should be able to open a cinnamon session but you'll have to install more packages in order to launch cinnamon-settings:
3.orbit
4.gnome-common
