My apologies; I should have kept this thread up to date with what happened on my machines.
I reinstalled SLK 8 on 4 machines (2 x86 and 2 amd64 - one of the amd64 belongs to my girlfriend) and, after 500 or so updates, they are all working perfectly with Thunderbird 11.0.1 happily giggling away (yes; I do actually have a giggle.wav).
So the problem was not with Thunderbird as such but with something on the machines. My gut feeling is that it has something to do with the upgrade problem of a few days ago.
There is a remote possibility that it's connected with kernel 3.3. I haven't switched kernels yet on the re-installs so am running 3.2 and will update to 3.3 today and see what happens. As an aside; I'm happy to report that all the installs went very well except for the resolution problem on the Dell Studio - I knew what to do this time so just installed and then edited xorg.conf vertical refresh from 60 to 61.
I'm marking the thread solved because there isn't any way to reproduce the fault now.
Edit; switching to kernel 3.3.0 has made no difference - everything works.
