New kernel does not pull/reconfigure video driver

Postby mélodie » Sun Apr 22, 2012 16:15

Hi,

I have installed kernel 3.3.0 (testing the distro, so it's not for need but to see how it goes).

I have a amd64 processor, with a nvidia 8400gs installed, and after reboot to the newer kernel got just a prompt. So I logged in and when I did a "startx", I saw the message from Xorg related to "no screens found". So I didn't want to reconfigure xorg.conf to use nv, I searched for a nvidia driver of the right brand, found it, installed it, rebooted then all worked well again.

I will be back in a few seconds to bring back an extract from the entropy.log.

Here it is:
[16:22:46 22/04/2012 CEST] INFO: [Package] [client] Unpacking package: packages/amd64/5/sys-kernel:linux-sabayon-3.3-r2~0.tbz2

I wondered if something could be done about it from the package management point of view ? Is it possible to fancy some post-install script which would detect if the driver used is nvidia, or ati fglrx, and suggest to add a package ? Or any form of post-install action which would avoid leaving the user without a gui environment ?

Here is the package I installed then:
[16:34:55 22/04/2012 CEST] INFO: [Trigger] [client] [POST] Running env_update
[16:46:28 22/04/2012 CEST] INFO: [Package] [client] Unpacking package: packages-nonfree/amd64/5/x11-drivers:nvidia-drivers-295.40#3.3.0-sabayon~1.tbz2

After a successfull reboot, I removed the former kernel which removed some packages related to Virtualbox. Are these removals normal ?

There is a kernel-switcher for this exact reason.

Oops ! I missed it... Where should I have met with it ? At the wiki ? In the distro, else ?

Thanks,

Hi,
Ok, at the Entropy page (btw the fr side needs a refresh... I'll try to look when I find time).

Would it be impossible to integrate this kernel-switcher to the new entropy gui, Rigo ?

That would be nice to have the whole package management in the same package management gui...

:)

(yes, Sabayon would not be anymore for advanced users... so what ? :P )

Thank you !

That's a bit hard, but you can ask the team with a make feature/package request :)
