I edited the subject because Nvidia did actually not exactly cover the complete problem and this discussion as mentioned above.

@ Melodie : I have installed indeed Virtualbox, it is weird an operating system is installing a new kernel if you are installing a certain package if this is true! beside the fact upon starting Virtualbox it is complaining about a new version which is not available in the ports.

I already discovered that some packages indeed seem to need an old kernel in order to run as I discovered last week with OpenSuse Tumbleweed. (I am running both systems next to each other so if one fails I still have another to use.)

I installed these operating systems last week because they are rolling distributions and usually up till than I was running Kubuntu which requires no Linux knowledge and I did not encounter this kind of interesting situations.
I tried almost every OS in Distrowatch and each Linux distribution seems to have certain child diseases and other weird stuff (Tumbleweed is young and not very userfriendly).

With Sabayon I am for some reason (I installed plenty of packages) stuck with about 5 different versions of kernels (including something called Sabayon Fusion).

Everytime I am searching Google for something about Sabayon it gives me Gentoo. I found a Gentoo helplist for uninstalling old kernels (http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Removal) but I do not know if it is applicable to Sabayon too as I seem unable to find anything about uninstalling old kernels in Sabayon.

Would you try removing your older kernels from within Sulfur, after an update if needed, of course ?

I have used Sulfur and removed the old kernels.

I think I know what happened. Sulfur offers about 30 different quest additions instead of only showing those needed for my kernel. I did not knew the numbers were referring to the Linux kernels and installed the ones I believed to be the latest version. I thought Synaptic had it's moments but Sulfur is not very clear at moments.
The latest Software center of (K)Ubuntu just shows and installs the stuff needed.
Think I still have to get used to this approach.

You gave me the idea to try so I installed kernel version sabayon-3.3.0, (which lead me to post here).The one(s) installed has a mark in front of the line, a green square, you can't miss it. If you want to check what kernel version you system is using you can type in console "uname -a". or "uname -r". Please try both.

You also need to pay attention to remove only kernels your system is not using while you remove, otherwise you might destroy your system.

I am using latest kernel sabayon-3.3.0 and used this wiki:

I still ran into the same problem described in my first post and used:

equo install nvidia-drivers#3.3.0 sabayon

eselect opengl set nvidia

gpasswd -a 'username' video

to fix this issue when booting into a black screen after doing kernel upgrade.

I found this command for in terminal on another website to update / upgrade the system (I hope it is correct as it does all at the same time):

equo update && equo install entropy equo --nodeps && equo upgrade

After doing upgrade and doing this same command if often gives the option to remove obsolete packages as well (although I do not know what --nodeps means).

I am running 2 pc, one is using same hardware as yours, also running same kernel sabayon-3.3.0 version as the one I'm using right know (intel 64 bit / Nvidia GTX260)

I removed all old kernels, and Sulfur removed some Virtual box packages I had installed but all is working fine on the system right now.

First thing that should be done is after installing Sabayon is (this should be done automatically in my opinion)

This saved me a lot of time when doing updates/upgrades because it took over 2 hours updating the system because of the downloadspeed the standard mirror was offering.

The correct way of updating the kernel is via kernel-switcher

Is there a way of changing your system from 32bit to 64 bit or do I have to do a complete new re-install?

I am using Virtualbox often and I am annoyed with the fact that 32 bit kernel only supports 3gb memory and 64bit above 3gb which gives me the possibility to give more available memory to the OS in Virtualbox since apparently I am running 32bit whilst I thought I downloaded a 64bit install dvd.

I checked the downloads, the only thing Sabayon is offering is x86 and AMD64

Intel 64 bit is either x86-64 or EM64T at Gentoo website.

However at Gentoo I just found:
The AMD line of 64-bit extended processors were released well ahead of Intel's offering. Therefore, for historical reasons the arch keyword for all x86-64 compatible architectures is amd64.
Whoever came up with that idea should be shot on the spot (matter of speaking of course)

I did not knew that!
I as noob user do not follow historical reasons, I follow logical reasons and 64bit should be either

Sabayon_Linux_8_64-bit_K.iso or Sabayon_Linux_8_amd64_&_x86-64_K.iso

and not Sabayon_Linux_8_amd64_K.iso which in my opinion does only cover AMD64 processors due to it's name.

Several other distributions just have named the downloads 32bit and 64bit to avoid confusion.

Anyway, the advantage is I have to reinstall 2 pc because both have 32bit and I can try upgrading doing it correctly this time.

Ps. Just a noob question. Why do certain packages, like Virtualbox, require a certain Linux kernel? How come it is not possible to install all versions of Virtualbox on a same Linux kernel?
