Kwin Overloads CPU After Updates [Solved]

Postby tonyawards » Thu Apr 19, 2012 5:55

After the updates to kde and x11 on Monday 16 Apr, when I rebooted I now have a 100% CPU load, and the computer is essentially locked. I can get to the desktop in kde, though no panel icons (trash etc) show, nor does the notification panel. But the system is basically unresponsive.

Kwin is currently reading as 91% CPU usage with a normal login.

But - - when I log in with the KDE Plasma Workspace Failsafe mode, I am in and everything runs normally, nice & quick. no CPU overload at all. Puzzler.

I checked my nvidia matches and I have (for 3.3.0) the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-295.40#3.3.0-sabayon and also the x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace-295.40. Seems to match.

Looking around, I saw references to check the data in xorg.0 log and the xdm.log, which are indeed showing some strange errors.

Many, many like this one in xdm.log, almost all related to DBUS:

Code: Select all
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
klauncher(7786) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(7432)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed:  "Not connected to D-Bus server"

along with the clock not synching, numerous others. In the xorg.0 the EE messages all refer to dri and dri2, which as I understand it, is not needed with the nvidia driver set, is that right?

Does the DBUS session-bus have anything to do with this, possibly? Seems like I need to fix that regardless, though not sure how. When I check it I get:

Code: Select all
# /etc/init.d/dbus status
 * status: started

I'll post the contents of the two log files, if they may help.

From what I've read, most people can't get the KDE desktop to show at all; I get in, it's just fully loaded up and nothing runs. What else can I give you to look at here? I'm (obviously) not sure where to start.

kdm.log excerpt shows a supposed nvidia mismatch, but I thought I had 295.40 installed...:

Code: Select all

Re: Kwin Overloads CPU After Updates

Postby tonyawards » Fri Apr 20, 2012 3:02

I have tried a couple of things, neither of which has worked as yet.

I reinstalled kwin, since that is listed as having the massive load in my System Monitor breakdown. No luck, might even be a bit slower, if that's possible.

On a Fedora forum I saw someone with a similar, though not exactly the same issue, from back in 2010. The recommendation was to rename ~/.kde4 to .kde4.old - - tried that but no difference. So I changed it back.

Not sure what to try next. What actually is the difference between a normal desktop login and the failsafe one? All I have immediately noticed is that desktop effects like cube, etc. are gone, and Firefox's fonts and so forth look more like an old Win98 design. What is it not activating that could be the culprit? I have yet to find a definitive list to begin to debug this.

Thanks for any help you can give.

That was happening to me some updates ago. What is happening sometimes it's that kwin starts sucking processor, so I do a reboot and everything's ok. It may also have to do with nepomuk, because when I was suffering this I notice notifications were getting stuck by cause of nepomuk eating proc, and kwin started to get stuck.

Someone at the IRC channel told me that maybe Kwin was starting before it should. I saw no sense in this since KDE session is what controls all child processes. I would suggest you check all your startup apps and programs.

Good Luck.

tonyawards, what do you have in the file ~/.dmrc?

Fitzcarraldo, in my /home/user, ~/.dmrc file I've got:

Code: Select all
[Desktop]
Session=KDE-4

when logged into the standard kde plasma choice, and currently, (running in failsafe mode):

Code: Select all
[Desktop]
Session=kde-plasma-safe

...nothing more. Both versions of the file have 644 permissions.

joe74, I have nepomuk disabled, just because it does slow things down a bit too much for my taste to leave it running, don't miss it much anyway.
Rebooting, both a full restart and a logout and back in doesn't have any effect, either. And my startup app list seems pretty basic, as far as I can tell.
I'm not sure about kwin initializing early, and not sure how I would check for that.

The contents of ~/.dmrc are OK. What Plasmoids (widgets) have you got on your Desktop and Panel? It could be that one of the Plasmoids is causing the problem. Have you tried deleting (or renaming) the directory ~/.kde4 so that you start from a clean slate? The directory will be recreated automatically. Try that.

Code: Select all
$ cp -r ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4backup
$ rm -rf ~/.kde4

I don't really have any plasmoids that I use, just the basic list of things: Launcher, Task Manager, Desktop Switcher, with magneto, Network Management, Calendar & Clock, Keyboard, KOrganizer, Notifications and Jobs, Volume, and the like. No special widgets.

I deleted .kde4 after backing it up and rebooted into the normal Plasma desktop session, and except for removing all my Desktop and KDE settings, I don't see any difference. My standard login and Desktop are still extremely slow and unusable, but booting into the KDE Plasma failsafe session runs fast as ever.

In the Standard KDE Plasma session, I can see the uncustomized KDE screen after I login with the row of icons loading even as I hear the computer booting to the Desktop in the background. Magneto still gives its startup notifications etc., but the System Tray, clock, and Trash are all not showing on the panel (nothing to the right of the Task Manager, basically). Even Yakuake is unresponsive; I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to get to the terminal.

Are there any specific logs or reports that might help you that I could access? And should/could I rename my .kde4backup to .kde4 to get all my customizations back in failsafe, or better to wait?

Well, it's already clear from the log output in your first post that something is very wrong. Another log file I would look in would be ~/.xsession-errors, but I don't think it's going to shed any more light on the problem. That D-Bus message seems to be the crux of the problem. Google seems to show that several people with that error message got rid of it by downgrading the NVIDIA driver. However, if the KDE Plasma Workspace Failsafe session works in your case then I'm not sure whether downgrading the video driver would make a difference in your case. Possibly the key to finding the cause of your problem would be to ascertain the difference between a KDE normal log-in and a KDE Failsafe login. See if Google sheds any light on the difference.

tonyawards wrote:And should/could I rename my .kde4backup to .kde4 to get all my customizations back in failsafe, or better to wait?

Yes, if the experiment made no difference then you can delete the freshly-created ~/.kde4 and move your original back. Actually, I have just noticed in your second post that you already tried this experiment, so my apologies for wasting your time repeating it.

Hmm... I'll bet that Desktop Effects are disabled in the KDE Failsafe Mode. I wonder if you have Desktop Effects enabled under your normal KDE login? If you do, try turning them off. To do that, edit the file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and change "Enabled=true" to "Enabled=false" in the [Compositing] section.

See nvidia-drivers-295.40 performance issue. I'm almost certain the problem is caused by the NVIDIA driver you're using. And I'm almost certain that, if you turn Desktop Effects off, given that KDE Failsafe Mode is working for you, you can at least get by in KDE normal mode with Desktop Effects disabled, until NVIDIA fixes their driver.

I have not yet tried turning off the Desktop Effects, I will shortly, as soon as I can reboot. But wanted to post this while I am still up and running.

After Googling a bit I found some references to DBus involving krunner and other apps, so I tried to replicate that here, just because... and I got:

Code: Select all
 # krunner
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
unnamed app(23425): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server:  "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

unnamed app(23422): KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.

zenboy spike # kate
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
kate(23434)/kdeui (kdelibs): Session bus not found
To circumvent this problem try the following command (with Linux and bash)
export $(dbus-launch)
KCrash: Application 'kate' crashing...
KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit
sock_file=/root/.kde4/socket-zenboy/kdeinit4__0

[1]+  Stopped                 kate
zenboy spike #

Kate opens normally by the way, just not in the terminal. Krunner won't open anything at all after the command.

And I'm getting tons of this in my xsession-errors:

Code: Select all
startkde: Starting up...

Goes on for far too long for one post.

Some other references to QT I am still trying to understand, and figure out if any of this is related, and how. I still don't know if that leads back to my kde problem, will post back shortly if I find anything else. Will also look at trying to get a definitive answer to the real differences between normal and failsafe sessions (seems harder to find than it should be). I really wish I knew what was in that upgrade list back on the 16th (from now on I think I'll export the list of major ones before executing) to try and narrow this down more.
