Kwin is currently reading as 91% CPU usage with a normal login.
But - - when I log in with the KDE Plasma Workspace Failsafe mode, I am in and everything runs normally, nice & quick. no CPU overload at all. Puzzler.
I checked my nvidia matches and I have (for 3.3.0) the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-295.40#3.3.0-sabayon and also the x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace-295.40. Seems to match.
Looking around, I saw references to check the data in xorg.0 log and the xdm.log, which are indeed showing some strange errors.
Many, many like this one in xdm.log, almost all related to DBUS:
- Code: Select all
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
klauncher(7786) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(7432)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Not connected to D-Bus server"
along with the clock not synching, numerous others. In the xorg.0 the EE messages all refer to dri and dri2, which as I understand it, is not needed with the nvidia driver set, is that right?
Does the DBUS session-bus have anything to do with this, possibly? Seems like I need to fix that regardless, though not sure how. When I check it I get:
- Code: Select all
# /etc/init.d/dbus status
* status: started
I'll post the contents of the two log files, if they may help.
From what I've read, most people can't get the KDE desktop to show at all; I get in, it's just fully loaded up and nothing runs. What else can I give you to look at here? I'm (obviously) not sure where to start.
kdm.log excerpt shows a supposed nvidia mismatch, but I thought I had 295.40 installed...:
- Code: Select all

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.
