Quick question about --nodeps

Postby jasohall » Tue Apr 17, 2012 20:46

I had a quick question about --nodeps in entropy that just popped into my head and I want to make sure I don't screw myself. I'm trying to keep a nice tidy lxde desktop and have started bringing in a few gnome components with --nodeps as needed to fill in a few gaps like user management.

Well... it works like a charm but now I'm wondering if I do an update will it pull in the dependancies or will only the package be updated? I am imagining a horrible nightmare of gnome and kde taking over my system... kind of like braveheart without Mel Gibson.

Am I correct in assuming only the package will be updated? Thanks.

Updates do calculate dependencies, so dependencies would be pulled in.

I'm not sure if you can do an 'equo upgrade --nodeps', nor do I think I would advise doing so if you can.

What is it about the dependencies you want to keep out? The hard drive space? I get the feeling it's almost more of a desire to keep your system 'clean' of things you don't use. And while I understand that feeling, all they'll do is take up some disk space if you aren't using them.

Really? Bummer. Without going into a long rant, I'm concerned with ram consumption and ease of updates mostly. Adding more programs into the mix means programs starting that I don't want that I have to attend to and I don't want a lot of downtime from updating my system weekly. Oh well, no big deal it just means I'll have to stick to command line and non gnome/kde programs so that I can keep my sanity. Thanks.
