startx cannot start after upgrade [Solved]

I upgraded last week and restarted today to find that X will not start. I get the login prompt. I login but when I type startx this error message occurs.

Error message:

/usr/bin/startx: line 156 cannot create temp file for here-document: Read only file system

Fatal Server error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock

xinit: giving up
xauth: error in locking authority file /root/.Xauthority

I see the /root/.Xauthority is 0 bytes.

I would prefer not to reinstall so any help would be appreciated.

sabayon uses xdm

check the xorg log file and other log files for errors

also make sure these come back clean:

equo deptest
equo libtest
equo conf update

I had serious clock skew. I ran chkdsk and filesystem errors were fixed. All is fine again. Thanks
