Sabayon 8 broken

Postby mkauzlar » Sat Apr 07, 2012 19:33

Hello.

I did an equo upgrade and got:

GRUB LOADING.
ERROR:UNKNOWN FILESYSTEM
ENTERING RESCUE MODE
GRUB RESCUE>

Tried to fix grub2 with:

http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... tore_Grub2

But then I got an unknown block or filesystem is not root etc...

Couldn't fix it so I downloaded Sabayon 8 xfce x86

Installation went fine (I partitioned the hd with 4 primary partirions:

sda1 /boot
sda2 swap
sda3 /home
sda4 /

all seems to install fine but after reboot I get again:

GRUB LOADING.
ERROR:UNKNOWN FILESYSTEM
ENTERING RESCUE MODE
GRUB RESCUE>

Starting with live cd I can see that the grub.cfg says to mount a LVM device?

Tried to fix grub2 with:

http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... tore_Grub2

But then I got an unknown block or filesystem is not root etc...

So no luck.

Then I thought: that's because I chose custom partitioning. So I reinstall and choose all default settings, but same result.

If I choose to recover grub from the installer live cd gets to a python error and chrashes.

THan I thought: something is wrong with my HD

I had a copy of linux mint, tried to install and all is fine. So the system is ok, which is an asus eeepc 1005ha by the way.

What's going on?

sounds like you need to point grub to the correct paths if getting unknown block or filesystem is not root

I did that and still doesn't boot... says the device is not a valid root. I tried all paths I can think of.
The question still remains... why would I need to do that? Shouldn't just install and work? Shouldn't just update and work?

It should put the correct paths in, but apparently something is detecting something to throw it off.

Try to give us the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg if you don't mind. Sounds like your grub is trying to use the root device as the same device as /boot.. Since you have them partitioned on two separate partitions you will need to specify it in your grub configuration or it will think that boot is on the same partition as root. Since your sda1 partition doesn't contain a "boot" directory it is failing to load.. At least thats what appears to be happening. Did you upgrade from grub-legacy (grub1) to grub2? Maybe your configuration got screwed up in the process. If you want to join #sabayon on irc.freenode.net we might be able to help you resolve the issue a bit quicker.
