distro hopping over? [Solved]

Postby religion1903 » Thu Mar 22, 2012 7:20

i have 39 years experience in IT, mostly as a programmer.
i have tied 30 distros, approx over the last 3 months looking for a faster distro that actually works.
sabayon was easy, and the fastest of the ones i got to work. arch was its nearest contender and failed miserably
on reliability. i think it was slower than sabayon with fusion kernels as well.
so this is my new replacement for pclinuxos, i will happily spend a year or two on it.
i like to have a experimental distro as well, was thinking LUNAR.
or when i get this one the way i want it am better starting again with a bare SABAYON and source code compiling a second version.
anyone tried this, speed, reliability etc.
i hope to achieve more speed, but its more the experience with community support i am after now.
I am all ears to the experienced.

Hello, you don't say which flavour of sabayon you are using, but there are minimal cd's (corecdx includes xserver & fluxbox) which you can use to build a system from. I use corecdx with kde4 added & it is very fast. I don't use portage as everything I want is in entropy & just works. My corecdx + kde loads to a useable desktop noticeably faster that the standard kde sabayon.

If you like speed and easyness - I recommend SL8-xfce edition,

If speed AND only CLI is your game; then the SL8-spinbase edition is something to look at. This one is totally "bareminimum" where you can build/install/conf anyway u like.

Entropy is the official prebuilt rep for sabayon, but it has support for Portage (from gentoo) if u want another type of power.

Finally, one of the dev (wolfden) have made a daily experimental forensic edition. (not personally tried it yet, but im planning to): http://wolf911.us/wgo/?p=633

i looked at wolfdens work and am impressed.
the other post stating even greater speed could be achieved with coredx is also useful.
i have decided to go with spinbase as a result of your advice.
time to get my hands dirty.
thank you
