I've lost sound again and it's down to pulseaudio refusing to start.
It's giving me the following error:

Last time I got this I solved the problem by removing the PULSE_SERVER environment variable from my .bashrc, but this time it's not set and I cannot find where else it may be set to cause this error. 'echo $PULSE_SERVER' returns null, so it's not the environment variable this time. I've checked the 4 files in /etc/pulse but they have't been altered and it's not set in any of those.

Can anyone help this time or is it going to be another case of me bashing my head against the desk until I can figure it out for myself? Google has, as usual, proven totally useless because I seem to attract errors that nobody else gets.

Forget it. I solved that with 'pax11publish -r' but it hasn't solved the problem. A verbose log gives the impression that all loads fine, but it segfaults and I'm buggered if I can find out why

No sound at all again. I think I'll give up and go back to Debian.

It works with a different user!

I've tried deleting everything pulse related from my home directory and tmp directory but to no avail. Nothing valid under alsa, so what else can I remove to reset it?

I would suggest you compare the PulseAudio configuration files of the two users. I don't know if it's of any use to you, but here are five of my PulseAudio files:
