The problem appears to be resolved in KDE 4.8.1. Inserting a USB stick, browsing the files, then ejecting it with the Device Notifier applet did not cause the shell to crash whereas it did in 4.8.0. Marking this topic as solved.

Untrue.

However it looks like the problem has to do with the kind of experimental graphite CFLAGS that we recently tested with.
We thought this would be fine to have in the build-server make.conf, after a good testing period, but now it seems to give problems with recently compiled Qt 4.8.0 (this was compiled just 2 days before KDE 4.8.0).

So we reverted those flags for Qt and uploading a Qt revision in Limbo now.

For the future this means that we will only enable those graphite flags on software after some serious testing not by default.

Hopefully we can say we fixed it now.

So, is this fixed in the next updates (i.e. tomorrow)?
Will it be available through KDE 4.8.0 update or KDE 4.8.1 packages?

Thank you.

We want to be sure and extra carefully test this. When we think it is resolved it will be pushed to main as soon as possible.
I already tested KDE 4.8.1 and despite the problem in this topic, everything seems to be just fine. So expect it all soon.

Thank you again!
I am almost sad to know that lot of work will be rolled back just to avoid issues in one applet.
It sounds like this applet should be fixed.

Nothing is being rolled back, we just recompiled Qt with different CFLAGS.
On the user end it will popup as a Entropy revision.

@ Joost

I had no idea about the CFLAGS. When I concluded this issue was resolved, it was after some testing with USB devices that I did today but not before I downloaded the four updates which were available earlier in the day, which contained the new Qt 4.8.0. In any case, is it okay to leave the topic marked 'Solved' or should I leave it open until we have more concrete proof? Thanks for all your work on this by the way!

@cmost
