KDE 4.8.0 plasma-desktop-shell crashes w/ USB disks [Solved]

Guessing that this has not been resolved yet. Have not seen any updates lately.

Experiencing the same problem since KDE 4.8. Insert (not just usb stick) external HDD, plasma screen goes black. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del then logoff, and sometimes can get back to a screen, if that does not work, then do a full re-boot.
(fyi using dual monitors)

Question, with a "rolling release" is there something we are supposed to do to uninstall or clean up, after a new release? May have missed it, but did not see it in the Wiki.

Also the icon on desktop not being able to open related folder is still now working either. Believe that is a Dolphin issue.

First of all, I'm french and my english is bad... sorry

I experienced the same issue, but not with usb stick, only when attaching a external USB HDD.
The only way I found to resolve temporarily this problem is to remove the "new device notifier" plasmoid from the bottom taskbar (near the clock).
At least I can now browse my HDD with any file manager, like Dolphin, without crash of plasma-desktop or plasma-netbook when I turn on the HDD (the desktop does not turn to black anymore).

I didn't have this problem with 4.7 release, but only since the upgrade to 4.8.

Since nearly nobody is giving any technical details about their systems this is still going nowhere.
However I did notice that somebody opened up a bug for latest NVIDIA drivers and GNOME3 Shell problems.

Could it be that people who have their plasma desktop crashing and getting a blank screen that it is because of they are using latest nvidia driver in combination with this bug in KDE 4.8.0?

So far I was able to at some point make Kactivities crash when brutally insert/eject an USB key. However in my case (I use ATI/AMD FGLRX) the desktop was able to recover itself.

I don't suffer from any Plasma Desktop Shell crashes in KDE 4.8.0, and I don't have time to read through all this thread at the moment. But I wonder if the following blog post by KDE developer Lamarque Souza has any relevance to what some of you are experiencing: http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2012/03/desktop-freezes-in-48x.html?

In bug #287002 it is stated that apper is one of programs that freezes kded. Just as a notice I have never used apper. Until now everybody that has disabled apper's kded module reported that it fixed the freezing problem. You can try it yourself, just go to systemsettings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Service Manager, locate the "apper" service, stop it and uncheck the checkbox in "Use" column for that service, then click on the "Ok" button.

All I can state is that I don't have Apper running.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, I don't have, (nor have I ever had) the apper service running on my system. Another interesting tidbit I've found with this bug is that plasma-desktop-shell will crash at the conclusion of a CD or DVD burn. The bug has something to do with KDE's new re-written removable devices do-dad. Personally, I'm of the school of thought that if it ain't broke...don't fix it! The old one worked just fine as evidenced by KDE 4.7.4's stability.

Today update rendered my Sabayon non-operational.... I have experienced all possible problems regarding USB drives with latest KDE 4.8.0, but today's update has made my system unusable.
Before KDE was crashing when I disconnect pendrives, and sometimes when I connect them. Now it is enough to connect USB and bang!

KDE 4.8.1 was released on 7 March, and I installed it.

Currently pre-compiled packages are available for:

Gentoo Linux provides KDE SC 4.8.1 packages in main repository.
More details can be found on Gentoo KDE Guide.

Kubuntu packages are available for 11.10 More details can be found in the announcement on Kubuntu.org.

openSUSE packages are available for openSUSE 12.1 (one-click install), for openSUSE 11.4 (one-click install), and openSUSE Factory (one-click install).

Perhaps that will work better for you than 4.8.0. So far it's working well for me, but then so did 4.8.0. Hopefully it will be in the SL Entropy repositories soon so that you can try it out.

As the release only contains bugfixes and translation updates, it will be a safe and pleasant update for everyone.

Best workaround so far: Disable device notifier

- In the KDE panel right click on the "show hidden icons" arrow (it's next to the clock)
- Uncheck "Device notifier"
- Click on "Apply"

Plug and Unplug USB device.
