error messages GRUB - LVM messed up [Solved]

Postby batvink » Wed Feb 22, 2012 17:26

Hi there.
I'm affraid i messed up my LVM. and some other things.
Allthough the system boots fine, i have a few errors during the boot process:

First, just before the GRUB-menu comes up, in a split-second i get 3 errors:
Code: Select all
Error: no such device e0cd82fb-e034-40f6-b4a8-a9f8cfe46084
Error: physical volume pv0 not found
Error: no suitable mode found

Then, when booting the system, half-way i get these errors:
Code: Select all
* Setting up the Logical Volume Manager ...

 * Failed to setup the LVM

 * ERROR: lvm failed to start

Now, i already know what i did wrong.,
My Sabayon installation sits on /dev/sdd and consists of
/dev/sdd1 --> /boot
and
/dev/sdd2 --> LVM (vg_bwginc-lv_root, vg_bwginc-lv_swap, vg_bwginc-lv_home)
I had some free space on /dev/sdb2, and wanted it to be part of vg_bwginc Volume Group.
so, with fdisk, i changed the partition type to LVM (0x8e) and did the following:
Code: Select all
# pvcreate /dev/sdb2
# vgcreate  -s 16M vg_bwginc /dev/sdb2
# lvcreate -l 100%FREE -n lv_storage vg_bwginc
# mkreiserfs /dev/vg_bwginc/lv_storage

I created a mountpoint, and add an entry in /etc/fstab
with the logical continuation that now i have a Duplicate VG name. (which produces the error),
Instead of adding the new partition to the Volume Group, with the "vgextend" command.

My question is:
is there a way to repair this mess, without loosing/moving data,
or would it be better to backup the new partition, revert everything, and start over again. (the right way)
thanks in advance...

Re: error messages GRUB --> LVM messed up

I am not an lvm expert and did not folllow everything you did but reiserfs lets you change logical volumes on the fly i.e, without unmounting anything.

I added a 320GB HD to my pool of disk space on the fly (ext4 fornatted). I will post my notes from that here, it might be useful to you. I put the output of the commands in red.

Add a 320GB hard disk to LVM:

Using 320 GB SATA drive, /dev/sdb

First get current state of Sabayon File System:

Code: Select all
pvscan

PV /dev/sda2 VG vg_kiwi lvm2 [931.00 GiB / 0 free]

Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "vg_kiwi" using metadata type lvm2

Sabayon divided the disk space into root (lv_root) on /, home (lv_home) on /home and boot (not part of LVM) on /boot.

Code: Select all
df -T |grep  'Type\|boot\|home\|/$'

Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

/dev/mapper/vg_kiwi-lv_home ext4 912589416 20402616 846511488 3% /home

All formatted with ext4.

Use cfdisk to create a primary partion using the entire new disk of type 8e, LVM and write the partition table.

Code: Select all
fdisk /dev/sdb -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

I want to extend vg_kiwi with the new disk space and then extend lv_home with it. With ext4, I think I can do it on-the-fly without unmounting anything with ext4.

Code: Select all
vgextend vg_kiwi /dev/sdb1

Volume group "vg_kiwi" successfully extended

Code: Select all
pvscan

PV /dev/sda2 VG vg_kiwi lvm2 [931.00 GiB / 0 free]

Total: 2 [1.20 TiB] / in use: 2 [1.20 TiB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ]

Code: Select all
lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home

Extending logical volume lv_home to 1.14 TiB
Logical volume lv_home successfully resized

Code: Select all
lvscan

ACTIVE '/dev/vg_kiwi/lv_root' [50.00 GiB] inherit
ACTIVE '/dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home' [1.14 TiB] inherit
ACTIVE '/dev/vg_kiwi/lv_swap' [9.81 GiB] inherit

Code: Select all
df -h |grep 'Size\|home'

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_kiwi-lv_home 871G 20G 808G 3% /home

Not resized?

Code: Select all
resize2fs /dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home

resize2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
Filesystem at /dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home is mounted on /home; on-line resizing required
old desc_blocks = 55, new_desc_blocks = 74
Performing an on-line resize of /dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home to 306511872 (4k) blocks.
The filesystem on /dev/vg_kiwi/lv_home is now 306511872 blocks long.

Code: Select all
df -h |grep 'Size\|home'

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_kiwi-lv_home 1.2T 20G 1.1T 2% /home

Could have used lvresize instead of lvextend and would not have had to resize separately.

Here is an lvm cheat sheat:

There are reduce and remove commands but I don't know how to use them.

Re: error messages GRUB - LVM messed up

Postby batvink » Wed Feb 29, 2012 21:52

thanks BHReach,

but whatever i did, i couldn't get rid of the Duplicate VG name.,
so i reinstalled the system. (too bad...)
i tryed everything, searched the internet for a solution, but no luck.
allthough the system was running perfect, i mean even with the Duplicate VG name i had full access,
(it was just a error message, one could live with...)
i still choosen to reinstall.
Thank you for the effort..
