Network manager applet disappeared / incompatible

Postby chasha420 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 10:00

Hi,

I'm running gnome 3 / cinnamon & even yesterday everything related to networking was working fine but just today I realised that the network manager applet disappeared. Even when I reboot it's still not there & the only way I can connect to internet is by using dhcpcd. I really have no idea why that happened but the IT guy in charge of monitoring our network said that the router was broken or something like that & they need to replace it...could that be the reason for this problem?

When I try to manually go to network settings @gnome3 this is what it says:

"The system network services are not compatible with this version"...I have no clue what it means but network manager applet was quite useful since it allowed me to configure my stuff with an easy GUI interface.

Anyway, let's say I'm not able to run network manager...alternatively for the time being how do I configure the "name servers, virtual mac address, static ip address, etc." using dhcpcd? Can anyone point it out because I'm not really familiar with it.

Thanks.

Edit1:
Well I've read the man page of dhcpcd & I've been able to set up a working connectiong & now I know how to get a static ip, cloned mac, etc. but what I still haven't figured out is how can I add google's nameserver "8.8.8.8" to the config? I mean without that name server my box fails to resolve some sites, etc. or even resolve hostnames so as a result I can't access some sites or use ssh to get to my shell, etc.

Edit2:
Hey guys according to what I know at the moment...only way to add google's dns as nameserver is by manually editing /etc/resolv.conf...but the problem is every time it gets over written & the settings go back to default ones, etc.

So how do I make this entire process automated? Meaning I don't want to manually edit everything everytime just to get it working :(

Help?

@cl00t: Thanks for trying to help me out but network manager as far entropy is concerned is already installed @gnome3...dunno what's wrong now even though a few days back everything was working fine.

I guess if there's no other solution to my problem I may have to code a GUI interface from scratch using my pythonic skills Lol...may be I can do it much better & automate this simple task.

Edit:
Also I noted a few days back that I installed gtk-pod for my ipod or something similar & all of a sudden anjuta ide got installed along with it...I mean how are they related? Lol.
