Question about Cinnamon [Solved]

Postby chasha420 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 18:18

Hi guys,

Just a few minutes back I was reading Sabayon 8 release details @ sabayon.org & the new desktop environment "Cinnamon" which used to be @Linux Mint caught my eye so I decided to give it a try.

Actually I have a gnome3 install & after installing Cinnamon I still feel like Gnome shell is still there...because whenever I move mouse cursor @left edge of the screen I'm brough to the gnome shell screen with the ability to choose among various windows / apps. So my question is....is there a way to permanently remove Gnome 3 & use cinnamon or is it just to risky & I'm better off sticking to gnome 3?

Anyway let me know what you guys think.

Thanks.

Maybe MATE is what you are looking for
its a Gnome2 Fork.
But unfortunatle it seems like there is no package for Sabayon/Gentoo available, yet...
Maybe you can build it from source

I think the aim of Cinnamon is, to have a Gnome3 Desktop with a feel of gnome2 (Status Bar, Main Menu and so on)
there is a way to remove the Shell-Icon..but dont ask me how

Not in latest Cinnamon.

Anyway Cinnamon is a fork of gnome-shell. This means that a developer taken the source and changed it. It still depends on other GNOME3 stack packages.

MATE is no option. It depends on old unmaintained/deprecated code. It might even collide with pacakages from Entropy/Gentoo. You better be sure what you are doing.

Thanks guys, sorry I confused cinnamon with mate...I actually tried mate before & didn't know cinnamon was a fork of gnome3. But so far I really like it...for some reason I feel like it's much more lighter than gnome3 & also I like the new menu bar, panel & the animation effects :)
