Booting LiveCD without install gets me to pretty desktop with 3 icons and no panels at all, no "off" button. Do I want to install this? Tried live cd twice, failed twice. Had to F1 console to 'exit'.
My Machine:
nvidia 8600
P4 3.3 ghz
4 gb ram

did you check the md5sum?

I don't know about the OP, but I did on the 64 bit Gnome version and had the same problem.
I'm using an HP Pavilion DV6T-6100 Laptop/Core i7 2630QM/ATI Radeon HD 6490M/8GB DDR3/blah blah blah
