SL8 installer crashes after selecting HDDs to mount [Solved]

Postby waxitman » Sat Feb 11, 2012 0:12

Hello. I am trying to install Sabayon 8 amd64 K But I cannot go beyond the first few steps.
After selcting Languages, Keyboard, Basic HDD and then selecting those to be mounted a small window appears "Finding Devices" and the installer closes.
The same thing happened with a mistakenly downloaded Sabayon 8 x86 K.
Both versions were checked with md5summer and were ok.
It was suggested to try installation as root but could not begin a root session. "Session was locked by Sabayon"

My system is:
AMD Athlon II X2 245
2Gb Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTS 450

I have prepared the live system (runs fine) for logs as found in the forums but am unsure which options will be useful in this instance.
Any help is appreciated.

I have links to all pastebin options except fdisk -l which seems to have frozen the computer.
Messages after reboot and one install attempt.

01 - Pastebin Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8294
02 - Pastebin .xsession-errors http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8295
03 - Pastebin dmesg http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8296
04 - Pastebin messages http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8297
05 - Pastebin rc.log http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8298
06 - Pastebin grub.cfg http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8299
07 - Pastebin fdisk -l Seems to have frozen comp. used hard reset after 30+ min. No output displayed
08 - Pastebin kdm.log http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8301
09 - Pastebin Hardware Info http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/8302

Running the installer through the terminal as SU I get the message 'No volume groups found'. I have checked this in other forum posts but they mostly have already made the installation. I can access all hard drives through konqueror.

"sudo killall udevadm" as suggested in another topic gives 'no process found'

Please help

I would try the text install see if that works for you.

Thank you. I have tried but it quits at the same place, after scanning for drives.
Have tried some 'lvm' options today but didn't find anything to help though it also claims that I have no volume groups. I don't know anything about it. Was just trying anything I could.

Ok think I may know the problem. you may already have 4 primary partitions on that drive.

Download Gparted you can get it and http://www.distrowatch.com load gparted in live mode and format the ubuntu partions to ext4
(Note if you have anything on the ubuntu partitions that you need to save copy it to a cd or flash drive first!)

The run the Sabayon install again see it that works.

Yes I had 4 primary and one extended partition. I have deleted and merged all partitions except the windows partition. This section has been formatted with ext4.
Unfortunately this did not fix the problem.
While loading the live DVD the following messages appear:
No cpupdate.sh script found, Skipping
Warning rcsys not defined in rc.conf falling back to automatic detection
Error fopen(/lib64/rc/init.d/rc.log) failed no such file or directory

Could any of this be related?
Also, the output of terminal 'installer':

sabayonuser@sabayon ~ $ su
sabayon sabayonuser # installer
No volume groups found
00:21:28 Starting graphical installation.
Loading /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us.map.gz

It is time for some sleep now. If you have more ideas I will be happy to try them tomorrow. I thank you for your help.

I have now installed Sabayon 6 which came on a magazine cover. Installation with no problems but it is 32bit. I had hoped the current version would install over the top but I still have the original problem. I still want to run Sabayon 8 and definitely want 64 version.

I would still like some help if anybody has any ideas.

Try deleting the partition you formatted and let SL 8 install itself in the free space. I have had that work in the past.

Hello!
I am having the same issue as the OP here. 32bit system, trying to replace the Kubuntu installation.
I already tried booting into installer mode, text and graphical, booting live CD and use installer. Nothing works.
Also I tried what the last post suggested, removing the partition altogether to let the installer manage it, also doesn't work at all. Now I am left with a completely non-functional computer, and help is highly appreciated!
