Xorg 1.11.3 and Nvidia drivers fails [Solved]

Postby Matt » Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:47

I have just upgraded my sytem this morning, which seems to have mostly upgraded Xorg and a couple of other things. After reboot the X server fails to start at all. I can get it to start by deleting my xorg.conf file and using the nouveau drivers as root but when i reboot the xorg.conf seems to recreated itself(??) and X fails to start again.
I'm using the 3.1.0-sabayon kernel with 173.14.31#3.1.0-sabayon nvidia-drivers.
I have tried running eselect opengl set nvidia and nvidia-xconfig but same problem.
Oh and probably the important part is the error X throws
(EE) NVIDIA(0): This video driver ABI is not supported.

Not sure if that's the problem or just a red herring. Can anyone help me get my X server back?

Cheers,
Matt

The next problem

So Xorg runs just about fine with the 290.10 drivers, however. Running Vectorworks via wine with these drivers only renders random bits of memory in the drawing window rather than the plan i am working on. As it happens my work is entirely dependant on being able to run vectorworks. I shall begin the research on downgrading Xorg.

The update

Postby Matt » Thu Feb 09, 2012 4:42

Since my last post and before i read the notice on the entropy notice board about legacy nvidia cards, i decided to buy a new graphics card - a GeForce GTX 570. Any excuse really. I was very dissapointed when i was up and running with it to discover i still couldn't run vectorworks nor could i run the binding of isaac, a total time wasting game that's best i can't run anyway, nor could i run BeerSmith2 with wine. This was devistating as that's where i have all my beer recipes. But then i found if i have GDM set to zoom everything runs just perfectly, except that only one process can access the sound card at a time. So listening to music through Banshee AND hearing the sfx while playing isaac doesn't work, i only get the sound from the program that started first. GDM not zoomed fixes the sound problem, but other programs won't work at all. Zoom on and all programs work but only one program can access the sound card even though my user account has permissions to the pulse group.
Anyway, i can do my work again so everything is just fine. Don't ask me how i worked out the GDM on zoom thing, that was a total accident.
