Gnome-Shell killed [Solved]

Postby ddeimeke » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:25

Hi,

after checking some extensions for Gnome 3 (activate/deactivate), Gnome-Shell refuses to start.

I get a blank desktop without the top bar and without a chance to start applications via ALT-F2. I am able to start a terminal via right-click on the desktop and "Open in terminal". The window, which opens on this command does not have a menu bar or any window decoration.

This is what I see in the log, I uploaded the complete part of the log to pastebin.

Any hints are welcome.

Dirk

the extenions are installed into your home directory in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/

I would start by removing or moving them out of the extensions folder and seeing if that doesn't get it back. There should be a folder for each extension. It seems my fear of extensions were correct. As gnome makes changes the extensions break and leave a person without a desktop. I've already seen some that fail to install. So if we have lazy maintainers for extensions, yikes.

Ah, ok.

Yes, thanks a lot. I removed all extensions from the folder and now I am able to use Gnome Shell again.

extensions.gnome.org has a big "Alpha" on the page. I can undersign that this is true.

Works now. Thank you

I guess it's best to maybe install one at time. I'm sure users are gonna be running into this often.

Glad it working now!

Agreed. Most important point is, that the extension worked while logged in, but Gnome-Shell refused to start the next time I logged in to my computer.

Cheers
