How to sftp in LXDE? [Solved]

Postby BHReach » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:20

I am testing LXDE amd64 DAILY iso (1-4-12). pcmanfm will not accept sftp address, says not supported.

Is there a missing plugin or does Sabayon include some other application for gui sftp browsing?

Hi

Dolphin/Konqueror (KDE) support sftp
Nautilus (GNOME) support sftp
Gftp (FTP client) support sftp
Midnight Commander (ncurses) support SFTP/SSH and more

I know there are many filemanagers that support sftp as well as many ftp clients. pcmanfm supports sftp also but support was not compiled in for the version that comes with LXDE. I assume that if they left support out they had some other included program that does support sftp. That is what I was looking for.

Also, many of the programs not included with a major DE are not being actively developed, for example the current version of gftp is over 3 years old.

One very light file manager that I have been looking at that is under active development is rodent (the former xffm, XFCE's file manager before Thunar). It is in the gentoo package database but not in Sabayon's.

uhm. I think you use FUSE technology to mount remote host/s and surf in them with PcManFM

I suggest you sshfs-fuse package

I installed that package but it still did not work but the error message changed.

pcmanfm needs gvsf to access remote file systems, when I installed it, it could access sftp addresses.

I don't know if it requires sshfs-fuse, I will try removing it and see what happens.

Also rodent does not support sftp, there is a plugin but it is not ready yet.

mc is a very nice light file manager with numerous features. It does support ftp and other remote protocols, it is a ncurses application that runs in a console. It is mouse aware so if you run it in a gui terminal you can use the mouse with it. You can also use the mouse in the console if you run gpm.

It might be a good idea to include mc with LXDE so you don't need to add other packages to be able to work with remote files systems.

I removed sshfs-fuse and pcmanfm can still access sftp addresses so you only need to add gvfs.
