NetworkManager won't remember any settings [Solved]

Postby trebi » Mon Oct 17, 2011 22:58

Hi,

I have problem with my NetworkManager, because after reboot it just won't remember any settings. It also asks for root password each time.

Formerly, I've used wicd-client, but I found it not user-friednly. To be exact, no automatic network setting detection and no possibility to enter password in way that it will be hidden on screen were very annoying. Also I wasn't able to set up it to work in network with multiple access points and I had to fill up all credentials and settings every time a moved to another classroom, so that's why I've decided to move back to NetworkManager.

So, what am doing wrong with NetworkManager and nm-applet? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not sure, as I'm not experiencing your problem, but you could try downgrading NetworkManager and nm-applet as explained in my post Re: Wireless network doesn't auto-connect [Solved]. If that does not solve your problem, then I suggest you file a bug report (see the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page).

Thank you very much for your post, but the downgrade hasn't solved anything. That proves, that problem might be elsewhere, not in the versions of NetworkManager or nm-applet, but in some policy/keyring settings etc. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with this stuff in Sabayon and my idea may be wrong. Are you sure I had better write a bug report?

Other solutions and ideas are welcome! All I need is easy-to-use wireless network manager which can remember network settings, is able to connect automatically after boot up and handle multiple access points (that means same SSID, certificate and access credentials, but different MAC address etc.)

Solved by removing /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf. I suggest to back it up, because I don't know why this work. I guess this may be affected somehow by previous installation of wicd. Also make sure there is no wicd deamon running in rc-update.

nm-applet connects now fully automatically without asking for any passwords

The problem is not exactly on nm-system-settings.conf itself, but in the "ifnet" plugin listed into it. So it's not necessary to delete the file, just make some changes in it.

Please take a look at: http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=25537&start=11

Just to avoid a bit of confusion, wicd has nothing to do with NetworkManager, I think I may not of been clear with trebi while we worked this issue out on irc.

I had same issue as trebi with auto connect on nm, so I installed wicd to see if it had same issue .... wicd did not.
I then searched the devs mailing list and found that this is a bug upstream and by removing
text file nm-system-settings.conf from /etc/NetworkManager should cure it.

So I switched back to NetworkManager, deleted wicd from rc-update, added nm to rc-update.... reboot and the wicd dameon kept starting.... this somehow prevented nm from starting, would ask for password and then fail connecting.
I was blaming this on me removing the config file from /etc/NetworkManager
I then equo remove wicd to prevent the wicd dameon from starting and rebooted, NetworkManager auto connected with no problem. Just saying, Think I really confused trebi with my wicd issue

The cure is to simply rename, move or in my case delete the file
as root
Code: Select all
mv /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.old

This will simply move the file and here it works perfect here. wicd has nothing to do with it unless you installed it.
