omg... it's full of menus

Postby Neopath » Tue Nov 28, 2006 19:11

Hi there,

new user, first post.. hello world and all that...

First let me tell you that this is a fantastic distro.. everything works out oh the box, wine,video,mp3 (remotely too!) and it looks fantastic.. it detected my nVidia card and beryl and all that.. I'm a distro addict. I've lost count a long time ago of how many distros I tried... lots. This is one of the best i've seen... details, details and more details.. I like details.

But....

The menus... where can I start?

Why so many programs? I can (somewhat) understand this happening on a LiveDVD... it's nice to discover new apps and games and stuff but why on the installed system? this is insane.. how am I going to remove all this before Christmas... 2007? :)

seriously, I may have missed it.. maybe there's a button I didn't see during the install to choose what to install?

I hear there will be a one-cd mini-edition somewhere down the road.. I just can't wait.

To be fair,I installed it last night for the first time.. I don't believe I'm a linux noob but i consider myself a gentoo noob and i'm still trying to understand kuroo so I may have missed something entierely... speaking of which, I know I haven't looked around that much yet, but if you guys could direct me to a good sabayon/kuroo/package managing tutorials that'd be much appreciated...

Don't take me wrong.. I'm seriously thinking about keeping this one for my main distro.. I love it already... I'm just going insane over the multitudes of programs available (i counted 3 irc client without even trying).. The menus are H-U-G-E... I need to clean up real bad... but how?

Again.. Bravo andf thanks for reading...

Ok, i would suggest using submenus rather than trying to reduce the installed package base.

For the Example of the IRC clients, Just create a submenu, IRC clients and move them in there.

That work for you?

if you don't want that much, then d/l the mini 3.2 when it comes out, either that, or just emerge -C, shouldn't take too long

You can also switch between menus in KDE by right clicking the menu button and selecting "Switch to ..".
