Updates immediately after install

I just spent about 3 hrs installing Sabayon 6 GNOME and after the equo and sulfur system updates, my SYSTEM at the top of the screen disappeared. I have Applications and Places, by no System with the the controls (Prefs, Admin, Shutdown, etc....). I had it before, it's simply gone. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm using an HP Pavilion Centrino laptop recently converted from M$ Vista. Any assistance is welcomed. Thanks!
