gui fails with Sabayon_Linux_6_amd64_E17.iso [Solved]

Postby joe3 » Fri Sep 09, 2011 17:49

This happens whether I want to simply run the livedvd or install (with gui)
from the Sabayon_Linux_6_amd64_E17.iso
But it's the installer I want to use...

When I try to use the graphical installer the video fails when it should first
be asking me which language to use. At which point my Sony flatscreen monitor
informs me that the video signal is out of range "resolution > 1280x1024" no
mater which combination of: legacy (noapic nolapic acpi=off) noaccelmanager
I insert into the boot options...

It occurred to me to try adding "installer-gui" to the safe mode boot options...
but it turns out that safe mode had the same problem.

I could run it in console mode, but the text installer doesn't seem to
offer a custom partition option...
(there being only choices for: :
use entire drive
replace existing linux
use freespace

I've got 4 other working linux installations. With preformatted ext3
partitions. I do not want Sabayon to reformat any of them.

Though, If I could simply tell it to "replace existing Linux" on the
already empty preformatted ext3 partition I could put up with needing to use
e2label & tune2fs on it to restore my required settings.

But while it will let me choose which hard drive, it won't let me select a
partition before it wants to write changes to disk... This is not good.

As it happens this 6 year old HP Pavilion a140n with an AMD Athlon 64
processor and 1 gig of ram, has an integrated "Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE"
graphics adapter that did not respond well to the nouveau driver with
Arch, OpenSuSE, PCLinuxOS, nor Ubuntu. In every case I needed to use
whatever proprietary Nvidia drivers their repository offered...

And since I can't understand any other reason why the gui installer
would insist on a "resolution > 1280x1024" I think what I need to know is
how to get the installer to NOT use the nouveau driver????

Though if the experts here don't think that's the problem, then I'd welcome
their suggestions of what it could be...

PS:
I tried searching the forum prior to posting, but the search tool didn't
want to include the search term "nvidia" so I searched for the quoted string
"Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE" where one thread was for a similar problem...
{see 2007 thread @ viewtopic.php?f=50&t=11607&p=66665}
But the nokvm cheat code that wolfden suggested didn't work for me.

UPDATE: gui fails with Sabayon_Linux_6_amd64_E17.iso

Postby joe3 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 2:32

While waiting on a response, I've continued to dig at the forum for clues. I learned two probably pertinent facts {that I'd have found sooner if I could have filtered the forum listing to only those posts containing both the [too "common" to use in search query] search terms of "nvidia" & "boot" sigh }...

Anyway, I learned that "spin" iso(s) such as the E17 version don't contain as many video drivers as the main stream versions such as the {yuck gnome} & {unforgivable kde'4'} versions...

And I learned that one cheat code that should avoid that problematic nouveau driver is
"xdriver=vesa"... Which I'll try next time I've enough time to attempt an install. I'll report the results here. And if it works, I'll mark the thread as [Solved]. After all, once I can run equo, I should be able to solve the driver issue fairly quickly I'm thinking. That is to say I expect the repository must have some proprietary Nvidia drivers right?

Ya know though, if the boot help screens can't contain a complete list of valid cheat codes, it would be nice if it could at least contain a link to such a list... It might even cut down on those forum posts where the only thing the OP really needed was the right cheat code. Just a thought!

Well I guess that problem only needed the "xdriver=vesa" cheat code...

once installed, I used equo ti install a nvidia driver. Then I added all the packages I'd installed to the laptop a few weeks ago. including e16 (as well as updating the E17 package. And rebooted

I can starte16 But somethings wrong with e17... But that should (I think) be a separate thread. cause the problem I started with is now solved.

Hi, I had the same problem, and I used the nomodeset selection from the options on the install. I got it installed but when I boot up after about a minute the gui freezes before I can even try to change video driver. I have an gygabyte EP45 UD3p mobo 8 gigs of ram and a nvidia 9800gt card usb mouse and keyboard, it's so close I can taste it, there has to be something I can do to get past this point.

thanks in advance for any help

Well I'll try cause I've been there. But do note I'm NOT an expert... But if your problem Like mine is that your Nvidia card seriously dislikes nouveau , try booting with the cheetcode "xdriver=vesa" instead of nomodeset.

IF that gets you past the gui frieze, you may want to also check out the thread where I learned how to get Sabayon to actually use the Nvidia driver instead of the installation default...

Hope this helps
