Live CD OK. Installed System Freezes Before Login [Solved]

Postby nobicycle » Sat Oct 01, 2011 8:01

Hi,
I've been absent for over a year from Sabayon, but as it is my preferred distro I tried the Daily X86 XFXE from 2 days ago and ran the Live boot fine. I then proceeded to install and really appreciated the publicity for Sabayon features displayed waiting for this to finish. I could not wait for the login prompt on reboot. I checked Alt-F1 and F2 messages during boot up ... no problem. Then just prior to the login prompt the machine froze! Just as I had experienced on the last release of Sabayon on a different machine. This was the reason for my absence from Sabayon ... I could not be bothered to seek help ... but now I would really like to get back to using it.

Please note: 1. I did not md5 the iso and now the Daily has changed. 2.I do not want to download another iso, because believe it or not, in the part of the world where I currently reside, the download rates are typically 10 KB/s, that is when the line is stable!

I do believe it is a systematic problem because I have experieced this twice on two releases on different machines.

Much obliged for any suggestions. I uploaded the logs to http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/7232

Best wishes

What do you mean by froze? You couldn't switch to console by CTRL+ALT+F1?

Thank you Raman
Froze = Sabayon blue background "Open your source ..." visible. Mouse cursor visible and responsive.
CTRL-ALT-F1 causes the screen to go black.
After which, CTRL-ALT-F7 which normally switches back to GUI I believe, does nothing.

I tried waiting 15 minutes in case it was some strange network seeking timeout issue.

I tried in recovery mode :
su - user
startx
But response is X cannot write to read only device.
I checked all the aforementioned logs and can find nothing strange.

Of course it could be an MD5 issue, but I cannot believe that given the exact same thing happened with a previous release (with a verified MD5) and given the Live CD runs perfectly including all apps I launched.

Have you tried, when Sabayon "freezes" to go in text mode (press F2) and check if there is a textual login prompt?

But you can login on console after CTRL+ALT+F2 right?
And another question, you use new user account, or you have mounted old /home catalog?

First try in console:
Code: Select all
#equo update && equo upgrade
#equo libtest && equo deptest

If you can logon on console give me output this commands as root:
Code: Select all
#uname -r
#lspci
#eselect opengl list
#eselect kernel list

Micia F2 yields nothing.

xdriver=vesa at boot up also does not help

raman, I did not do an update because the Daily iso was fresh of course. the kernel is linux 3 something. For lspci I uploaded here: http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/7233. But this is from Crunchbang Debian, that I need to boot for access to the internet.

I'll reboot now and do lspci in Sabayon.

So definetly it's problem with graph card.
You have some integrated card with VIA chipset?
My research shows, that with VIA chipset ppl have problems in another distribution, in Ubuntu in example.

Ok, you give me eselect opengl, thx. This was from your installed Sab right?
Could you check eselect opengl list on liveCD?
Is some difference, what driver load liveCD and installed Sabayon. We must find this diff.

Look at this:

I collected "lspci -k" into two files from Live and Installed environments. "diff" yielded nothing, so no difference in PCI drivers between environments. Same goes for eselect opengl list

Then logged in as root in recovery mode I did:

mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda3 / #remounted root rw
su - user # changed to my usual login environment
startx

This made an attempt at startup but failed. Two graphics mode consoles popped up. (don't know why)
I uploaded /var/log/Xorg.0.log into http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/7235
It seems to have errors in but I am unable to interpret it.

I don't see any particular error, You have problem with touchpad, but this is normal. So I don't know, why you can't start XFCE.
You may try to create new user account in console:
Code: Select all
#adduser {nick}

Maybe you have some problem with your configuration. Try to start XFCE on new account.
