Livecd 6 kde boots just partly [Solved]

Hi everybody

I have huge probs with the 6 KDE version in combination with my desktop.
On my wife's Dell Laptop it installed without any problem. I even upgraded it to kde 4.7 without ANY problem yesterday evening. She's using it for 3 weeks now.

My desktop however doesn't even make it till a fully loaded live session. Everytime i boot the normal way the system stalls. Safe boot or just vesa brings me to the prompt eventually.

using a dvd or usb stick doesn't matter. It ends the same

I have been busy over the past few weeks reading and trying but nothing helps so far

Hardware?

Dell Optiplex 320, 3ghz, 2 gb memory. Video Ati radeon 4350 pcie card
It appears that my system detects a dual head video card
There's the onboard Ati Radeon 200 and my pci-e ati radeon 4350
In my bios i have 2 possibillties in case of video setting:
Auto and onboard
Auto should lead to the installed 4350 and onboard just uses the onboard graphics
I have just 1 monitor installed and thats on hdmi whereas the onboard has a vga
Switching form output in the bios doesn't sort effect

At the moment on this machine I have a double boot: Win 7, Mint 10 kde.
They installed without problems.

Why isn't this machine able to boot the live cd?
What can i do

I've no idea about these two dual GPUs, but you could try pressing F5 at the LiveDVD boot menu and entering the following kernel boot parameter to see if the LiveDVD boots using the open-source Radeon driver:

xdriver=radeon

If that doesn't work, try with the following to see if the LiveDVD boots using the closed-source FGLRX driver instead:

Code: Select all

xdriver=ati

Can you disable the lower-spec. GPU in the BIOS?

If you do manage to boot to a working Desktop and install to the HDD, I don't know if the kernel switcheroo function would be applicable/possible in your case.

I tried them alle but no luck. It's not just Sabayon that doesn't boot. There are others too. I think I just have to be happy with what's working on this machine now.

My wife's laptop is still doing fine.

Hi everybody

An update for who is interested:
I couldn't stand not getting this distro installed on my machine. I kept on trying.
A week ago i dicided to download the iso once again. (the 5th time) burned the dvd which again did encounter the same problems.
Although i had tried before before i made a bootable usb stick using Unetbootin.

I tried to boot to a live desktop but that gave the same probs.

When using graphical install instead of booting to the live desktop it worked. For the first time I was able to install it to a test partition. Afterwards everything went fine. All the upgrades tested and installed all my favorite apps.

After that i cleaned my home home partition, kept my fingers crossed and installed it to my main partitions using graphical install on the usb stick. again everything went fine again.

So it looks like i'm a happy sabayon user after all.
