DNS Resolving/ Network related Problem [Solved]

Thanks FitzCarraldo, I followed your steps...but even after removing ipv6...the problem persists. Although I've noticed some change, there was a game called "Open Arena" and while connected to this network I could't see any servers...but after this change the servers are now visible, etc.

Also I have a major problem, when I try to update entropy it says the "repository doesn't exist".

Should I go for a fresh install? I dunno...it seems like after I made the switch to Thailand I'm having way too many problems to cope up with...and also if I choose to make a fresh install...then would you suggest using the Sabayon 6 ISO or a more recent one from the weekly releases?

I was trying to update entropy through Portage...but it seems like Portage has trouble resolving the network...may be it also relies on Python?

According to that thread, they are saying that python needs to be configured with ipv6 support...and that it may be the reason why it fails.

How do I do that?

As far as I know python on Sabayon is already configured for IPV6, this is done enabling the ipv6 USE flag in the python ebuild, which is enabled by default on Sabayon.
It seems that your problem is python, it can't resolve addresses, so neither entropy, nor emerge, are working properly.

I suspect a variant of the problem reported in the link posted by Fitzcarraldo or something similar.
Can you check the differences between the /etc/nsswitch,conf in your Ubuntu installation and the one in your Sabayon?
Try also to post it here, just in case.

Thanks Micia....btw I already made the switch to Ubuntu Lol.

Also in Sabayon I noticed that my downloads were around 250-300+ kb/s at max but on ubuntu and using their servers in Thailand the download was pretty fast 800-1000+ kb/s...I wonder why there's so much difference

Anyway, sabayon is like the love of my life...but unless this situation is resolved permanently or I shift back to my country I can't use Sabayon yet....but I can try fixing the problem & test it through a live cd.

Hi, I got yet another clue about what my problem might be related to from Ubuntu.

Whenever I connect to my network for the first time I get this message:

Your current network has a .local domain which is not recommended and incompatible with avahi-daemon network service discovery. The service has been disabled.

Hmm...but I already had avahi-daemon disabled in my previous install, etc. so I'm not sure if it is responsible for that. If you guys have any ideas let me know.

^In that case try changing the domain alias in /etc/hosts. Ask your network administrator what the domain alias should be in /etc/hosts.

This might be a silly question but... how do you connect to the internet? Using network manager or a manually configured net.ethX service? Did you configure it to use dhcp or did you gave your connection a static ip?
Your resolv.conf file looks weird, if you can delete or rename it and reset your connection afterwards. Otherwise ONLY put the Google dns addresses in it:

reset your connection and see if it helps.

If you know you're using DHCP to get an IP address then try
to release your network interface with

dhcpcd -k eth0


(I assume eth0 is your interface in use)
Let dhcpcd reconfigure the interface with

Also:

Some network admins require that you use the
hostname and domainname provided by the DHCP server.
In that case, use

In my opinion copying the files from Ubuntu (maybe selectively, in order to spot the issue) should be enough, the suggestion from Fitzcarraldo looks promising.

I would also try the popsUlfr's one, if none of the previous works, just to test if a manual setup can work

(Advanced apologies for hijacking an existing thread of the same topic matter)

This is what happened:
+ I installed Sabayon6/LXDE
+ Midori cannot name resolve, but manual name resolution works
+ entropy/equo cannot find sabayon-weekly respository
+ ping can name resolve

+ Tried suggestion to disable ipv6 and midori now can name resolve
+ entropy/equo still cannot find respository
+ pre-pended 8.8.8.8 to resolv.conf and entropy works

+ re-enabled ipv6
+ back to fresh-installation results
+ pre-pended 8.8.8.8 to resolv.conf and any program name resolves

Question:
1) How can I have these nameservers permanent without having resolvconf clobber it at every start up
2) Why is it that my gateway DNS doesn't work but 8.8.8.8 does?

Thanks in advance. Never thought transitioning from gentoo to sabayon would be this arduous...probably because of lack of ipv6 support? Although my Win7 box doesn't have this problem.
