Probably because the version of kernel is different, the version of X.Org Server is different, etc. It's not just a question of whether one is using driver X instead of driver Y, it's a question of which versions of X and Y one is using, and which versions of the supporting software 'infrastructure' (X.Org etc.) one is using. I recently tried to help someone I know to get audio working in SL. Even I couldn't crack it, and I know SL quite well. So he switched to Ubuntu, which worked out of the box in every area with his particular hardware (the story could be completely the other way round on different hardware, as I can personally attest). The versions of most packages were different (less bleeding-edge in Ubuntu), the configuration files were different, the kernel version was different (less bleeding-edge in Ubuntu), the kernel configuration was different, the modules blacklisted were different, and so it goes on. It is like comparing apples and oranges.

Hello Fitzcarraldo,

I agree on this one. Different distributions with different versions possibly give a complete different experience. My experiments with Ubuntu 11.04 plus Unity and a pretty instable version of Nouveau were horrible. :bom:

Another thing I did not mention which also came to my mind:
My Intel-based board (AS Rock P4i65g) features an Intel 865G Northbridge with integrated graphic adapter which is disabled in the BIOS. This could also be an issue. :?:

I am in the lucky position right now that I got another "scrap" Mobo (which is essentially new) plus a P4 2.8GHz and 2x1GB Infinion RAM. I will set up a freely wired system and (re)install Sabayon from scratch.
If everything works fine then we know at least for my other P4 that there is a severe hardware issue.

Regards,
Holger

Update:
It seems indeed that my other "scrap PC" has hardware issues.

I removed the graphic adapter (GeForce 6600), plugged it in my other mainboard and the installation of Sabayon 6.0 (KDE Version now) worked like a pleasue. I will do some more testing tomorrow and report back.

Ok, I was now able to install Sabayon 6.0 i386 in GNOME flavor via graphical installer straight from boot. I suspect there are real issues on my other box.

The GeForce 5700 I used yesterday has proven to be cumbersome since Sabayon fails to detect it correctly and the use propritary driver does not work. Now I plugged the 6600 GT in again and now installation went fine. I will mark the thread as solved now.

Beside this Sabayon should really only use a basic VESA xorg driver (http://linux.die.net/man/4/vesa). This would ensure that one even sees a graphical installer even if the graphic adapter is legacy (but there are still drivers available).

Linux should not behave like Windows and force people to upgrade their hardware. I have another barebone sporting a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 which still does a pretty good job for everyday work (web browsing, watching video on youtube, write mails, develop shell scripts and so on). I already filed a feature request.

When you boot the LiveDVD and reach the menu, press F5 and append nomodeset to the end of the kernel boot line and hit Enter.
