mkvtoolnix gui [Solved]

Postby msdobrescu » Sun Sep 04, 2011 11:03

Hello,

Is there any plan to include mmg in the Sabayon repo?
I really find unhandy to use the command line for these tasks.
Maybe I'm lazy :P...

Unfortunately the wxwidgets USE flag is not enabled in the mkvtoolnix package.
Sometimes I would find handy to split those packages, but maybe there is just too few interested users or there is not enough manpower

However the solution is not very hard, it is enough to recompile mkvtoolnix using portage:

1) open a console and become root

2) run:
(as root)
Code: Select all
emerge --sync

3) install wxgtk and some other dependencies using entropy and:
(as root)
Code: Select all
equo install wxGTK rake ruby rubygems

4) recompile mkvtoolnix:
(as root)
Code: Select all
USE="wxwidgets" emerge -1av mkvtoolnix

5) sync entropy and portage:
(as root)
Code: Select all
equo rescue spmsync

be careful when updating your system with entropy, it could suggest you to reinstall the entropy version of mkvtoolnix.

[Edit] added some other dependencies using entropy.

Thank you, but why shouldn't enable that in the package.
I've programmed wx in the past and it's a good framework.

I have done some programming on wxWidgets too, and it is definitely a good framework, but I assume that doing so would bring a lot of dependencies to anyone installing mkvtoolnix with entropy, while this is a thing that only a few would want. Thus they decided not to enable that USE flag by default.
This is only an assumption, I don't know the reason behind it.
I think that splitting the ebuild, making a mkvtoolnix package without the GUI and another mmg package containing the GUI, would be the best solution.

Agree, I'm a generic guy and the architecture of linux distros would naturally split this kind of packages.
There is also a mkv extract tool gui that would be useful, also separate.
But who is to decide this?

This is decided by the Sabayon packagers.

Did they split other packages too?

Using Sabayon further I realize that a good part of its users don't want or they are unable to build packages as Gentoo requires. So it is unnatural to them to ask them to do it, like the wx dependent tools need. Is there any chance to change this decision?

Sabayon does not force you to rebuild packages, it gives you the freedom of doing it if you have specific needs that Sabayon packages don't fulfill.
If you want you can request for mkvtoolnix to build the WX GUI by default using the Sabayon bugzilla, or even suggest for that package to be split.
Just let the developers know your suggestions :)

ensure to be clear in your bug reports, if you need to post logs and other similar things, attach them (don't use pastebin). You could also post this topic for reference in your bug report.
