New install failed, copied squashfs, how to reclaim space ?

Postby GladRags » Fri Aug 26, 2011 21:11

Hello All,
I am a long time Gentoo user and wanted to try Sabayon on an old machine for the benefit of precompiled packages and KDE 4.7. I have a few questions if anybody could help/answer.
1) The machine does not a CD or DVD drive. I tried to store the KDE ISO on the disk and mount it via GRUB2 and run using the same kernel command line as found on the ISO but could not do so. I guess the issue is with telling the kernel to load CD data from the ISO. I could not specify the 'cdrom=/dev/loop' parameter as loop device is being used by the installer for squashfs livecd. Does anybody have any idea how can I fix this ?
2) Due to this issue, I just mounted livecd.squashfs and copied all its contents to a partition, /dev/sda7 in my case. I changed a few files that we change when we install Gentoo and it seems to boot fine. Does anybody see any issue with this approach ?
3) I need to reclaim some disk space as the fresh install is using 6GB. I check that /usr/share/locale is using a lot of space. Can anybody help me remove unwanted language packs ? Is there a tool to do that ? Will changing LINGUAS in /etc/make.conf help ? I have changed /etc/locale.gen and reinstalled glibc but not much gain.
4) Another candidate using a lot of space is /usr/share/doc. Can anybody help removing the documentation set ? I guess changing /etc/make.conf USE to "-doc" will not help.
5) Another candidate using a lot of space is /usr/share/icons. Any ideas about this too will help.
6) Any general ideas to reclaim space will help.
Thanks a lot all my friends,
Have a great day.

I can only be of limited help as I primarily use Portage, and also I don't have access to a machine with Entropy at the moment. But, if I recall correctly, the SL LiveDVD contains packages for more than one language (e.g. libreoffice-l10n-de, libreoffice-l10n-nl, libreoffice-l10n-pt and so on). So, as you have copied the LiveDVD's contents to a partition on your HDD, you could start by uninstalling packages for languages you don't want. Do a search using the command equo search l10n and see what it throws up. You can also use the command equo cleanup (see the article Entropy in the SL Wiki) to get rid of any Entropy package tarballs, which are unnecessary as they will be re-downloaded by the equo install command if they are not already on your HDD.
