Unable to connect to wireless network with Atheros [Solved]

Postby Espreon » Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:47

I cannot connect to my wireless network with my Atheros 9285. I am using Sabayon 6 KDE amd64 on a Dell Inspiron M5030. NetworkManager shows accessible wireless networks (as does iwconfig), but when I try to connect; nothing happens... error messages don't even appear. Of course, trying to connect using iwconfig doesn't work either.

Note that I can connect to my network with other devices; the ath9k module is loaded according to NetworkManager and lsmod. Of course, I can connect to my network in Windows 7.

And yes, Google isn't helping me.

Thanks.

The AR9285 works in Linux generally, and SL in particular. In fact my media centre running 64-bit SL KDE uses the AR9285 with the ath9k module, albeit I have not yet got around to upgrading SL on it to the latest packages in the Entropy repository.

By "other devices", I take it you mean wired Ethernet?

Please post the output of the following commands, entered as root user:

Code: Select all
lsmod
lspci
ifconfig
rfkill list
cat /var/log/messages | grep -i error
dmesg

By "other devices", I meant my Wii and my desktop (with a USB adaptor).

"rfkill" wasn't available on the LiveDVD.

dmesg:

Are you sure that you are using the correct settings in NetworkManager, like encryption, passwords...
It seems stupid, but most of the times it is the issue, since it looks like all the needed modules are loaded and Linux is recognizing your wireless just fine.

By the way, do not use iwconfig when NetworkManager is active, it will most likely not work. If you have to use iwconfig, stop the NetworkManager service like this:
(as root)
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop

You can start it again using:
(as root)
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start

This is very strange, if you try this way:
(as root)
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 ap any
iwconfig wlan0 essid your_wireless_essid
dhclient wlan0

(you obviously have to replace your_wireless_essid with your wireless ESSID)
does it connect?

That works. I guess I can install Sabayon on my system, use that to connect, remove NetworkManager, and install/use wicd.

Thank you for giving me hope.

The problem could be knetworkmanager, replacing it with wicd is very simple, if you need help with that procedure, we are here.
It is also possible that the bug (if it is a bug) has been fixed in the latest versions, you could consider updating the system before removing NetworkManager altogether.

Yup, it appears that this was the problem.

Thanks again.
